Rent to close soon??

okay, so in the USA Today from Friday, november 23rd - they're speaking of the Broadway stagehand's strike. this paragraph is taken right from the paper itself:

Musicals aren't immune, either, "especially shows that were straggling along or were scheduled to close soon anyway, like Les Miserables, The Drowsy Caperone, Rent," says Adam Feldman, president of the New York Drama Critics' Circle.

i dont believe that Rent would be straggling along, so does that mean it might be closing soon??

the only reason i'd be excited for this, is that means the amature rights would FINALLY be available.

There's no official word of it closing, but I wouldn't be surprised. It's ticket sales recently have been terrible...

And as far as amateur rights, MTI is releasing them soon whether Rent closes or not.

really?! fu*kin sweet!
Luc

Like Mat said, it's bound to close any second now.

Why are the ticket sales so bad now? Is it because people can just watch the movie now? I know it's different and not as good, I'm just saying.

These were the grosses of all the shows on Broadway just before the strike...Rent had an average of 52% attendance...so...yeah...sales are very low for it. It's had a good run...I look for it to close within 6 months...just my guess though.

The fact of the matter is that shows just weren't meant to run for 10+ years.

Chicago...Phantom...Rent...They're all just getting stale at this point. It just happens to be Rent's time.

Phantom's going steady, isn't it?

Who can say? I wonder myself why Spelling Bee and The Light in the Piazza ran "out of gas" with the public so soon. And the PotO and Chicago movies (the first bad the second good) didn't seem to hurt.

Outside of the strike, PotO and Mamma Mia! were still packing them in.

Bringing back Rapp and Pascal probably hinted that the end might be near for RENT.

Yeah, I guess that's true.
Not Dead Yet

The rights to both Rent AND Drowsy Chaperone are coming out within the next year anyway, so that should be a big clue for both shows. Goodbye, Drowsy Sad. Good bye, Rent... don't like you that much...

EDIT: Of course, there would be limitations to the rights, especially with Drowsy. Drowsy is having a tour and I don't think you can perform it too close to when the tour hits your area...
Gwen

Rights...*stares at the word with insane hunger....*
I want to be in this show some day...prefferably before I turn old where I will end up doing it in my head like I do now...

Is there a set dates for the rights?

uhhhh... if Phantom was closing there would be a HUUUUUGGGEEE noise about it. It's Lloyd Webber's favourite of his shows, it won't go without a fuss.

The dreadful "Rent Remixed" is closing in London soon. But it doesn't count as Rent proper.
wicked_boy

^ When's Remix closing? I wouldn't have minded seeing it.
Belle

Remixed is closing beginning of February I think. Jessie Wallace has just started as Maureen..

Well burn on RENT Remix. Haha that lasted like a day!
wicked_boy

Well that was a waste of time. It's lasted like 5 months. F*cking brilliant. You would have thought it would have lasted longer without the "remixes".

I was with a group of show choir friends last night and mentioned this. Of course they all reacted the way you would expect: OH NO! IT CAN'T CLOSE UNTIL I SEE IT ON BROADWAY! THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END!Smile
Brother Marvin Hinten, S.

The sooner it closes on Broadway, the sooner your show choir friends can do it themselves. Be sure to tell them so.

Yeah it can. And it will.
When it's only selling between 50 and 60% of the theatre, no one is stupid enough to keep it going. Huge cast and crew to pay, and hardly anyone seeing it. I just can't see it staying open much longer. I'd give it two years, TOPS.
krisavalon

Eh, it had a good run.
