Rent School Edition info

Hi, I'm going to be putting on a production of Rent: School Edition in December 2008 provided everything goes well. I will be directing as well as performing. I was wondering how much the rights cost because I can't seem to find the price on the MTI website. Because our production will be entirely student run and have no funding, I know I will need to do some fund raising etc. to get the money but I need to know around how much it will be. Also, does anyone know what is included in the package you recieve from MTI once the rights are already ordered? Will we get all the orchestration, a practice CD, librettos, etc... Also, I'd like to know the exact ranges of the principal characters. I know the broad things i.e. Mimi is a belting mezzo and Mark is a bari/tenor, but I would really like to know the exact highest and lowest note each principal character needs to sing since the students that will be performing in this are very musically educated and it would be beneficial for them as well as myself as the director, to know them.
Any information is appreciated!

I, too, am directing RENT: School Edition. Our show is in April.

There is a $400 deposit that must be paid up front to hold the rights. This will be refunded when all of the materials are returned in good condition.

The cost will depend on the size of your theatre, your ticket prices, and how many people come to the show. We estimate 400 people per night for three nights and our cost is $275 per show. If we have more than 1200 people over the three nights, we will have to pay MTI a bit more.

The basic rental is $550 for two months. You will receive all the materials two months before your opening night. This includes librettos for all cast, a book for each instrument (piano/conductor, bass, guitars, drums), and a study guide.

Each additional month's rental is $400.

So, our cost is $2175, but we will get $400 back after returning the materials.

As far as ranges are concerned, I do not have that information, but I think it would be in your best interest to order a perusal libretto from MTI. It contains the script as well as the vocal selections - you could go through each song and find the ranges for the characters.

Good luck!

I actually think it's quite reasonable... Our median ticket price is $7.50 x 1200 = $9000.

That leaves a lot in the budget for sets and costumes, and hopefully a bit of profit.

That's cheaper than I would have thought. You'd think they'd milk the Rent cow for all it's worth. But I suppose they don't want to make the pricing unreasonable for the few schools that will be willing to put it on with its mature themes.

True. I guess you're right. I'm just new to everything so I didn't really know what to expect but I wasn't thinking it would go into the thousands. We're planning on doing it 4 nights so it'll be more expensive, I guess? When do you have to pay MTI by? Can you wait until after you already put on the show or do they have a specific deadline?

Am I the only person who thinks that the rights to musicals a bit of a rip off?

I feel sorry for the AmDram groups with not much budget and are forced to put on the most crappiest of shows.

There should be some sort of law that AmDram groups with not much money can put on a musical for a lower cost.

School Edition???

im not familiar with a school edition...how does that work?

isnt the show about people having sex with each other and getting sick?

Alright, there were two posts that pissed me the hell off in reading this thread.

Let's start with the first one:

To answer these objections in order:

1) No.
2) That's what they have to deal with.
3) The law SHOULD be that AmDram groups of CONSIDERABLE QUALITY AND TALENT LEVEL with not much money can put on a musical for a lower cost. If it's a crappy group that can only put on crappy shows because they're not the best at what they do and they have a low talent base, then they should stick to what they do until they can do something of that level.

If that's your understanding of Rent, I pity you.

Good day to all!
