Rent Rights?

Does anyone know when the rights to Rent are coming out? There's some interest in my community of doing it as soon as it's legal... methinks it's a show the public will actually WANT to see. Wink (My city's not real big on musicals, outside of a small group of dedicated fans Smile .)

I have no exact idea to when it's coming out, but I think I heard it'll be sometime next year?

movie

It's just law that if a musical becomes a movie, more people will be interested in it. Especially in my city. There's not a good deal of interest in theatre here, but there IS a big interest in movies. It is America, after all. Smile So people will tend to give a bigger chance to stage productions that have been "worthy" enough to be featured as a movie. Kinda lame, but that's life.

MTI does have the license to it, but they have not released them yet. They ARE talking about a HS edition, and I think a few school have even had the green light to do it, but my guess is that it will still be several years before the rights are released.

I heard that Jonathan Larson's parents, who own the rights, have to approve every single cast memeber who ever does the show, because they are that crazy about it.

Not too sure about that one, unless it only applies to US professional productions. When we did it here there was no approval process for the casting (or if there was, we in the cast weren't made aware of it. In which case I'm extremely flattered that I'm an "approved" Collins Cool )

Cheers

yeah, not sure where you might have heard that - could be some urban legend-type thing. i know in the documentary, it's said that mr larson has met every person in every cast, even on the tour, but i've never heard that they must approve BEFORE it ever gets produced. a bit crazy, if you ask me. There is a High school edition already. Only 4 or 5 schools have done it but it can be done. A drama camp near me was going to do it but did Evita instead. The rights are currently restricted but you can make a persual of Rent, not sure how much those cost.
