RENT--PG 13?

So I saw the new trailer of RENT last night, and it said that it was going to be PG 13! I was surprised. Anyone else hear/see this?

I was surprised as well. Rent is not a musical for children. The film should have an "R" rating.

I rejoiced! Now my friends and I can go together! Yay!
DramaRobin2002

I was surprised but now it'll allow for more people to be able to see it. There are two kinds of PG-13 though- Parents Cautioned and Parently Strongly Cautioned. I'm assuming Rent is going to be the second and that's not really a "childrens'" rating.

Wasn't there an article way back saying that the movie was going to be an R?

I'm sure the film will still be fine. They want a young crowd to see it, and I don't think that that's a bad thing, nor do I think that it will dumb down the story.
what_the_heck013

My fear is that it was rated R, and to increase the audience, they cut some parts out to make it PG 13.
DramaRobin2002

I don't think they did. I mean, we know what the songs are going to sound like, so no cutting there. And they really couldn't cut out any of the plot. I think it'll be okay.

Nothing in the movie version of Rent warrents an R. There's no gratuitous sex or cursing. There's no violence. There's no extreme drug use on screen.

The majority of PG-13 films AREN'T for children. Just because something is not for a kid doesn't mean it should get an R automatically.
jcstar

That's true. I was just going with my knowledge of the show.

If the film was made the way the show is, then it would get an R rating.

Then again, I consider anyone under the age og 18 to be a child. It's my "cracked rearview" way of looking at life.

Andy.
EponineGiry

It is Parents Strongly Cautioned.

Contact is gone, because the staging didn't exactly lend itself to screen. If they'd left it in there's very few ways to do it that wouldn't get it an R. And although they drop the f-bomb a couple of times in Tango:Maureen, the type of kid who's going to go see it is the type of kid who's heard a naughty word before. IMO.

RENT - PG 13!

I'm not too surprised about the rating, particularly considering the guidelines used for rating films:

The Classification and Rating Administration wrote:
PG-13 Parents Strongly Cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13. This signifies that the film rated may be inappropriate for pre-teens. Parents should be especially careful about letting their younger children attend. Rough or persistent violence is absent; sexually-oriented nudity is generally absent; some scenes of drug use may be seen; one use of the harsher sexually derived words may be heard.

I think that's probably about as far as RENT will push its "morally objectionable" elements.

The only reason why I've been suprised is because originally, RENT was supposed to be rated R, but I do see why PG 13 is fine now.

it's spelled "warrant"

and did you already see the movie?
dramaluvergurl92

i'm glad that its rated pg-13

i'm only 13 so if it was r i wouldn't have been able to see it unless i went with my parents or waited until it came to video...

i only hope they didn't cut stuff out for it to be approiate for a pg-13 audience....
Roger's Chica

They haven't cut out stuff just to make it a lower rating.

Both Anthony Rapp and Chris Columbus have discussed their surprise at the movie coming back with a PG-13 rating, they were expecting to get an R as well.

MOVIE CONTENT AND RATING

"Nothing in the movie version of Rent warrents an R. There's no gratuitous sex or cursing. There's no violence. There's no extreme drug use on screen."

I went to the advanced screening last night. Tom gets the crap beat out of him and he's robbed within the first ten minutes. No violence? Wrong.

No sex? Well, maybe no sex acts are performed and no one is nude, but the scene in the strip club is highly suggestive (considering the song lyrics that accompany it), there's lots of crotch grabbing and pelvic grinding, and the implied sex between several of the characters (including Mimi sleeping with Benny to retain the apartment) gives the movie a strict rating.

No extreme drug use on screen? Well, yes and no. But, again, there's a lot of IMPLIED use (including showing needles several times). And a far-shot scene of April shooting up.

Between the subject matter and the language, the rating it has is the rating it deserves.

That is not to say it wasn't a good movie. It was. I liked it a lot. The entire theatre stood and cheered before and after the show. It was quite an experience, but then again it was obvious the theatre was full of "Rent" fans.

i'm glad it's rated pg-13 'cause no i cna see it without my parents.
Phantomrose

It got the pg-13 rating on a "first pass" (I think thats the right word). Anyway, this means that parts werent cut out to make a pg-13 rating, it got the rating the first time it was submitted to the board. Like what was said before-both Anthony Rapp and Columbus were shocked that it didnt receive an "R."

I thought that they had to cut some language (most notably, the f-bomb dropped by the bag lady) and about 5 frames of April sticking a needle in her arm before they could get that PG-13 rating...

people have to understand that there can be the f-bomb in PG-13 movies as long as it doesn't refer to the act of f... it can be used as an exclamatory word. other than that, there's absolutly nothing in it to warrant an R.
flyingt

I'm really pleased! I can go see it now and take all my friends! I was surpirsed though, I though it would be R rated.

The rules as I have heard them explained:

Up to two or possibly three Fs as a modifier (e.g. "f***ing weird" or "f***ing cheated") or an exclamation (i.e. "F***!") is a PG-13 for language. Thee or four is an R.

"Motherf***ing" or "motherf***er" is an R. If they'd left the bag lady's lines in, it would have been R.
kitkatchicka101

I heard that would have been rated R, but didn't it so more people could go see it.
