Rent (Original) and Rent: School Edition

What has been changed from Rent to create Rent: School Edition?
Disney-Bway27

Pretty much all homosexual activity between Maureen and Joanne and Collins and Angel.
Almost no mention of Mimi's drug addiction.
Very little mention of AIDS.
No "Contact."
Changed lyrics left and right.
The fugue portion of "Christmas Bells" is gone.
Most of the inappropriate references in "La Vie Boheme" are removed...which is almost everything.
IIRC, "Out Tonight", from "When I get a wink..." is removed.

That's all the noteworthy stuff. There are also minor things like key changes and some slight change in the lyric order.
ActingDude17

Elliot pretty much summed it all up, but here's everything, straight from the 3rd page of the board.

Wow, that's kind of offensive, lol. I can understand removing contact for schools, but jesus, how does the storyline even work without those elements?

i thought the Maureen and Joanne stuff was there, but just the Collins and Angel stuff was cut.
High-baritonne

What is about Americans and their fanatic "don't let our children learn about sex"? If the production of Rent was at a school here in Norway, they would put the missing stuff back inn, don't caring if it said "shit" or "----". I think that if you aren't going to go by the book, don't go at all!

Thanks everyone for your input.

This version kept in most of the original, but there was still the leather/latex line.

Here's another version, this one's more faithful to the changes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMjD1rhZ_gE

RENT school edition changes

My daughter is currently playing Joanne in DAG's RENT school edition. The only changes are.... No same sex kissing. Joanne and Maureen still get close... No F words. No contact. Some lyrics were taken out of La Vie Bohem... like "to Marijauan" and "fags, lezzies, dykes cross dressers too, was changed to homos, lesbians cross dressers too... and the word dildo was taken out. I dont understand that because they still say the thing about having an erection on the high holy day...... They didn't take any drug references out other than that.... Mimi is still portrayed as an addict and Aids is definitely mentioned.

i saw that on the opening night at the Detroit State Fair Grounds. well done! altho there were some bumps, but nobody expects perfection in a high school production. i was thoroughly entertained.

hah, i felt outta place, 'cos my friends cancelled on me and so there i was this guy in his '20s watching a bunch of teens by himself. but, i kid. i love theatre and i give even youth theatre a chance. i'd read the article in Between The Lines... cant believe the city of Taylor screwed em all outta doin the show there - or maybe i can, i dont know much about Taylor, lol.

Im auditioning for the upcoming production in Canton on the 10th & 11th, so Im hoping to finally be a part of such a fun show.

good luck on the rest of your performances! Applause
