RENT audition

A production company thingy has rented a high school theatre in the area for the summer and has hooked up with that school and is doing the school edition of RENT. They said the only requirement be that actors be under 19. I am 17 even though I am graduating this year. Anyway I am half black half white 5'4" and weigh 170pounds. I want Maureen or Joanne, maybe Mimi but...ummm...yeah.

My audition I can sing any song from any rock musical. I assume that includes RENT but that is lame I don't want to audition with a song from the show, that is what call backs are for. So I was thinking something from Chicago, Hairspray, Les Miserables...ect.

I am thinking possibly Good Morning Baltimore. But yeah any advice any at all or suggestions I should go about doing in this audition?

thanks!!

None of the shows you listed are rock musicals.

"Good Morning Baltimore" is not suitable at all. Nor are any of the other shows you mentioned.

Take a look at shows like We Will Rock You and Tick, Tick...Boom!

I thought a rock musical just had rock and it fit in the catigory. So Hairspray would qualify. Could you please explain to me how it doesn't. I guess it makes sence that Chicago doesn't fit. And Wikipedia says Les Miserables is...

How about Grease or Mama Mia? I kind of just want song titles of good songs you think. Please and thank you.

I agree with the above posters, none of the musicals you listed are classed as rock. And don't take everything Wikipedia says as the truth. Wink Les Mis is FAR from a rock musical. Hairspray and Mamma Mia are pop really or old fashioned pop, not rock. Check out Tommy, Chess, We will rock you as already listed...also The Life. Aida. Shows with that sort of musical style. Grease is rock yes but the style of music is too old fashioned to audition for Rent with plus it's usually very overdone.

who on earth would list le miz as a rock musical? lmao!

from the roles you listed it sounds like your a good belter. maybe you could try something from "bare"? except that's a pop opera...not a rock opera.

Ok, I took care of the wikipedia article. lol

How about Hoplessly Devoted to you from Grease from the Bridge on until I hit 32 bars? What do you guys think?
I am a belter and I REALLY want Maureen but I don't look the part so maybe I could try Joanne. Smile tell me what you guys think? Audition's on tuesday. I REALLY WANT THIS!

Maybe one of Eva's fast songs from Evita.

Touch-a-Touch me from Rocky Horror might work.

Tick, Tick...BOOM! would be your best best but if you are concerned about sheet music, perhaps...."My Junk" from Spring Awakening. I know that it still on Broadway and all that jazz but it might be a good choice. If you are not afraid of singing a boys song, one of the boy songs that is not inappropriate might work too. I was thinking the beginning bars of "The Bitch of Living." The meaning would not fit your gender but it shows a very rocky side to singing. :] Just a suggestion.

I sang Good Morning Baltimore!!!! and I GOT A CALLBACK!!!!!! Callbacks on Monday. Wish me Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Next Ten Minutes

Congratulations on your callback, but I must admit I'm extremely surprised you chose something from Hairspray, as it's one of the farthest things from RENT. I highly suggest something from tick, tick...BOOM for your callback.

Break a leg! Smile
