Reno's Best SongI really can't form much of an opinion of "Anything Goes" (being as I own the crappy Revival CD ), but I thought that hearing everyone's favorite song that Reno sings would be a neat discussion, so discuss!

Yeah, that's the one I mean. I'm sure it has its strong points, but I really can't stand Patti LuPone.

Patti was actually dynamite in the role. it was before she forgot how to act.
anyway you cant base a show on one performer in the cast. you need to base it on the material.
and ythe 1987 version is far superior to the 1962 revival.

If a show has a big leading role that not only sings most of the songs but is played by an inferior actress, I'm obligated to base it on that person. As for the material, I hate Cole Porter and the whole premise of the show is a joke. Now I'm not even sure why I bought it!

Okay I see..you are a ---- asshole.
anyone who hates Cole Porter..one of the 3 genuises of American musical theatre doesnty deserve to own a single cast recording.,
never speak to me again,jerk.

Perhaps Salome is a bit harsh, but you hate Cole Porter??
Please explain!
I love Anything Goes, it is one of my favourite shows of all time.
I think Porter is a genius. Please enlighten me to what he has done to offend you.

Ive bene a student of Porter's work since high school I know ever song he has written that has bene recorded. for sheer genius in words and music only Sondheim is his peer.
and no..i wasnt harsh at all just honest.

Well, I guess I do owe everyone at least an explanation, as I seem to have unintentionally upset some people. Maybe I shouldn't have used the word "hate". It's not that I hate Cole Porter; I just have a few mild issues with his music. I understand that the majority of his work was written in the early 20th Century, but in the time period that we live in now, Porter's work just seems too primitive to me. Also, I don't think he put very much emotion into his songs. I think the reason that Sondheim and Rodgers/Hammerstein appeals to me more than Porter is that they attempted to put emotion into their songs. With Cole Porter, I think his main goal in songwriting was to appeal to the demographic that was at its zenith in the 1920's-1940's: people trying to get through the Depression and later World War II. For a composer to be likeable to me, they need to at least attempt to put emothion into their work, and with Cole Porter, I don't think that that was a very big priority for him.

Porter is timeless his music is as relevant now as it was then. his ryhyms and tone is more sophisticated than anyhing seen today with the exception of Sondheim.
His lyrics are unparalelled. His wit, wisdom, humor, and romantic discord is far superior to any.
no one can not claim that 'dOWN IN THE dEPTHS" "Make it another old fashioned please" "Once upon a tIME", "After You Who?", "You Dont Know Paree", "Just One of Those Things" or "Where Oh Where" among the 820 ther songs he has written are not masterworks and timeless songs that hold as much relevance in todays world than they did in the 30s-60s.
You honestly dont understand at all.

Ok, I have to base my opinions on my experience in the production I was in (1962 version)
You're the Top - Eh, ok. Clever lyrics, but that's about it.
Friendship - Most entertaining to watch. IMO, would be fun to do in a school talent show
I Get a Kick Out of You - Always gets stuck in my head, don't know why. Not that spectacular of a job.
Anything Goes - Catchy tune, clever lyrics, all-around great song.
Let's Misbehave - Eh, not my favorite.
Blow Gabriel Blow - Fun song to perform; there was so much energy on stage. Now I have a hard time just sitting and listening without getting up and dancing around to it.
Take Me Back to Manhattan - Love that song. Fun to sing, fun to dance.

Anything Goes or I Get A Kick Out of You
I love how 'I Get A Kick Out of You" is so sincere
And "Anything Goes has great lyrics great music and always seems to some up the show in two simple words, so ya, I guess why that's the total of the show!haha.
About the Patti LuPone acting in Anything Goes, I don't remember who said they thought she couldn't act but first of all, that's from an Original Revival Cast RECORDING, how can you tell how a person acts entirely on their voice, what's even more important in turn with saying it like you mean it is the body language conveyed by the actor, and you didn't see her act. I mean everyone is entitled to an opinion, but at least have the right amount of facts to prove it, because to me you don't have enough.

Either Anything Goes or Blow, Gabriel, Blow.
If I had to choose...I guess Blow, Gabriel, Blow.
I love the way Patti LuPone does this song on the 87 recording.

Its a great song but both the 62 and 87 revivals cut alot of the best lyrics. ugh.

salome.. although i agree with you..
(i love cole porter too)
but just because one girl didnt like a few of his songs doesnt mean she has shitty taste. plus, the way her school performed it could of had something to do with how much she likes the song...
but plus, im sure ive seen you say that you didnt like porters "heaven hop" song on some forum..
and i happen to love that song.. but im sure all of our other musical theatre tastes are the same...
anyhoo... thanks salome tho for getting the cole porter love out there

I wasn't comparing Cole Porter to Spring Awakening or Wicked. I was comparing Cole Porter to Cole Porter. I like Cole Porter, but I just like some of his songs better than others.

I also am not a huge fan of Porter and find it comical that somebody would say that "...his music is as relevant now as it was then." His music is anything but timeless, it is very defined.
As for Reno's best song, I'm fond of the title song, but only because the tapping is awesome.
|
Salome
|
wrong..his music although it harkes to the 20-50s is timeless in its themes its words its music.
Everytime we Say Goodbye is as emotionally relevant now as it was in 1941.
Anything Goes the song means even more now than it ever did in 1934.
there is a reason Porter's songs are the most recorded of any other broadway writer in history.
and i'd really like to know how you come to the conclusion. how many of Porters 800 plus songs do you actually know???

Everytime we say goodbye is my favorite Cole Porter song.
Although I disagree about the SA and wicked comment, I completely agree with what you said Salome.
