Removing vocals from a CD?

Hey everyone.

I'm leaving for college in 2 weeks, and I want to record myself singing a song to give to my best friend on a CD before I go. I can't get the sheet music in the right arrangement (or an accompanist, for that matter), and there's no backing track available.

I know there's a way to remove the vocals from a track, leaving just the instrumental parts. Even if there's an echo, I would be able to sing over it. I just need to get some kind of instrumental version so that I can record the song for my friend, so any help from someone who knows how to remove vocals would be very much appreciated.

The song is "Come the Wild, Wild, Weather" by Sutton Foster, on her CD Wish.

.wmv to .mp4

Does anyone know of any good *virus-free* websites where I could convert a few .wmv files to .mp4? I have googled it, but I don't know which sites to trust and which to ignore.

Thanks!

Far Off Broadway

There was a media program (Sony Sonic Stage or something like that) that had a function that did this.

It came with the computer, but maybe it's available for download or something. Not sure. (If that first suggestion doesn't work.)

For karaoke: You can download Audacity. It's a free download, and it won't mess up your computer with viruses or anything of the sort. Then google "removing vocals with Audacity" and it will give you a tutorial with how to do it.

The laptop I just got for school came with Audacity, and I had no idea what to do with it! Thanks so much! Smile

Terribly sorry, Gertrude. I meant to create my own thread for this. Embarassed
