regarding a newspaper articleMy dad told me something that interested me. Apparently, an article in a local paper "newsday" said the target audience was goth's and punk kids.
I find this very insulting in many ways. For one, that's almost encouraging labels. And yes i know that as much as i hate to admit labels exist, I would figure a good selling newspaper wouldn't write something like that. Anybody can enjoy a movie like this. It's a brilliant musical by Stephen Sondheim that a lot of people don't even recognize.
I asked around my school about this movie and people's opinions. Most of the kids in my school are seeing it because he slits throats ( I assume thats where the goths come in?) About 85% of the kids I asked didn't even know it was a musical!
I would also think that the target audience would be people who enjoy musical theatre. Although that's considered labeling and I don't want to be a hypocrite =P
I know this was a jumble of thoughts lol but some responses to this?
Do people agree or disagree?

Take a look at Tim Burton's main demographic.
There ya go.
This is why I was pissed when I first heard that he was directing.

they dont have to target musical lovers. we'll come anyway. but if its advertised as something appealing to more people, they'll get more money.
it's sickening, but I guess more people will come if they think it's a slasher film
I've talked to people in my school and I've gotten basically one of two responses:
-That movie looks so cool!
me: did you know it's a musical?
-What?!? maybe I won't go...
or
- do you know what that's about?!?
me: I know exactly what its about. (but you dont)

Well, me and my friends:
Me: (simultaneously) I love Sweeney Todd. It's my favorite musical.
Friends: (simultaneously) I love Sweeney Todd. It's my favorite musical.
that's what you get for hanging out with theatre kids.

^you're very lucky. the only other kids in my school who like musicals at all are like "OMG I love wicked but it's not as good as HSM because Zac Efron is so hott! Its so amazing!!! OMG!!!!" or "I like PotO, but that's an opera, not a musical." and "Sondheim who??"

I don't see what the problem is, except maybe that the failure to mention it's a musical is slightly misleading to that demographic. I've heard the "what is goth" argument so many times I'm sick of it, but Sweeney Todd by its very nature is goth as hell, and I can only imagine how much that will be amplified by Burton's touch on it.
Yes, crucify me, I said it. Sweeney's goth. It's a brilliant, gleefully macabre, operatic tragedy about a barber who slashes his customers' throats; how could it not be? Just because it wasn't written for that particular subculture doesn't diminish its appeal to the subculture; hell, most of the books/films/etc that defined the movement were written for their own sake, not for the sake of "oh look at us how very very goth we are," and most of the stuff that was created to pander to the subculture has faded into the obscurity where it rightfully belongs.
So in short, the Sweeney Todd movie being advertised to goths even though it's a work of art in its own right? Fine by me. Said advertising neglecting to mention that it's a musical? Deceptive.
Musical theatre fans are a target audience, but you're not the only target audience. Stop bitching about it.

im sorry orestes!
i didn't mean to offend anyone.
I understand that Sweeney is infact goth. I was more upset at the fact that a newspaper is using labels and that it failed to mention the OTHER target audiences. Perhaps I should have made that more clear.
I'm sorry if I offended you.

ALSO
there is a COMPLETELY different definition of "gothic" in the world of literature and art.

You make a good point. Now that I think about it, none of the commercials I've seen give any indication that it's a musical. Unless of course you count the little "Epiphany" snippet in one.
I'm predicting some surprised audiences.

I definitely see what Orestes Fasting is saying about Sweeney being gothic and what not, but at the same time it irks me, because all I can picture are kids in the theatre going " ...While the hell is Johnny singing?"
At the same time I love watching people's expressions when I tell them what Sweeney Todd is about:
" ... ...okaaay *backs away slowly"

Maybe you should appreciate that perhaps people like Johnny Depp are someone's first step into musical theatre and that this might bring in a whole new group of people who appreciate the genre. Give the newcomers some time. Then you can criticize.

and they'd also get right into Sondheim, which is a major plus.
