Reefer Madness Audition Help

Auditions for Reefer Madness are in a few weeks, and I am trying out for Mary Lane. I am very familiar with the music. The theatre is asking for two songs, one of which has to be an uptempo song in the "rock-theatre genre," to quote them.

I plan to sing "Lovely" from Forum as my first song in order to showcase the dumb blonde aspect of Mary as well as a soprano range, but I'm a bit stuck on the rock musical song. I know that I would like something a little beltier, but I can't really think of one. Any advice?

Type rock musicals in Wikipedia and a selection of most of them throughout the years will come up. See what you know/like from there...

Bizarre, I wouldn't really ever consider Reefer Madness to be a "rock"-style musical... at all.

We are totally going to the same audition. What a coincidence. It freaks me out what a small world this is.

Break legs!

You're going too? Exciting! You were in Metamorphoses, right? This is my first audition with this company. I'm a bit nervous.

This wouldn't happen to be Saddleback College's Reefer Madness, would it?

I'm mostly shooting for ML cuz that role doesn't require as much nudity as the rest. Shocked I'm kind of a prude.

I've never auditioned for a musical with them, just their straight shows. But I will say they're a pretty tough theater. Even though I've worked with them before I don't expect that to help me much - the director is very picky. And he can afford to be! Every director gets sopranos in spades...

And I wouldn't take the number of auditioners as an indicator of your competition. I call this particular theater a "hobby theater" for professional actors. In other words, there are quite a few folks who makes their living off theater who come to this theater to do something fun in their off time from their paying gigs. Which makes for TOUGH competition but makes for invaluable learning experiences.

So you'll have to be on your A game. But the director is nice as hell and I have the feeling casts a lot based on a certain look he wants or sound or what have you, so you never know what he wants. You could be just the thing.

Hah. Yeah. That's one of my reasons as well. Also, I'm going to be one of the youngest people trying out, I expect, so Mary seemed the most realistic.

Thanks a lot for the advice. Break a leg in auditions!

I'm not auditioning anymore. PM me if you want me to share my aud songs. They were pretty good, if I do say so myself! ; )
