Really embarrassing question: stage door?

I feel so embarrassed, but I'll bite the bullet and ask anyway. What is a stage door, and where is it generally located? (Obviously it differs from theatre to theatre.) Do actors come in/out before the show, or after? Are people allowed to wait there to greet performers? Do theatres like it? Do the performers like it?

It will be good to understand this once and for all, and maybe there is someone else out there who isn't familiar with what stage doors are either, though I doubt it. Wink

Stage Doors

Depends on the theatre... Sometimes at the side or at the rear of the theatre. You can ask an usher (steward) for the location if you want to...

As to people waiting there? At the Orange County PA Stage Door, I was to one side of a group - either family or friends. As people came out between the Matinee and the evening performances, they had a gimmick... "Which Kitty are you?" I am not sure that would work for everyone, but the ones asked were definitely dancers... and practically all of them stopped for autographs and a brief chat.

As long as you are polite and somewhat respectful about it, the cast members did not seem to mind. The two times I was there, I had an interesting observation of human traits. Some of the cast members present to you a certain body language that will tell you if they want to meet you or not... Some are very nice about it, and some even enjoy it. Depending upon what they have to do, they might even stop and chat a while.

The key word is "Respect" - Just do not press your luck and you can usually get along with security guards, and reluctant cast and crew members. By polite asking, I even managed to meet the Company Manager, and arranged a backstage tour...

Good Luck...

I was lucky enough to get to go to the Stage Door when I saw with show in Louisville with Rahlee, Amabella, and another friend of mine. It was after a matinee, however, and we were only lucky enough to find the door in time to meet one castmember... Meghan Randolph, who was an excellent Jennyanydots and a very sweet person. Though out other friend swears he saw the Quaxo/Mistoffelees actor and nearly chased him down... he has no restriction, though, and a bit too much of an obsession.

I find the easiest way to tell who is actually from the cast is the makeup that's still left on the sides of their faces... at least when they're trying to rush to get lunch. I identified the man who played Old Deuteronomy that way as I was walking down 4th Steet.

Ah, good times, right, Rallers?
