Real Cow Fake Cow

my school is putting on into the woods and the kid who was supposed todothe cow dropped out so i may be able to do it but im not sure if i want todo you think the show is better with a actor in a suit cow or a fake plastic/cardboard thing
Kiwi

I think it adds humor and realism when you use a person rather than a fake cow. Plus you'll have to work out moving it around and pretending to make it eat the hair and cape and such if it's fake.
Baker

If it's a good cow, I prefer the fake cow. An actor playing a cow distracts me too much - but at the same time, I lousy cut-out isn't worth it.
Kiwi

Yeah, if it's a realistic enough a fake cow would work fine.

How awesome would it be to have a real cow!? Haha JK the clean-up would be a b***h

We used a person as the cow and she was a riot as Milky White. Now for big productions like Broadway and West End, use a really good fake. For High School and community theatre, use someone. Not only will you cast an extra person, it's a good acting exercise.

Kiwi: I'd be the first to veto the real cow idea. All I ever smell is cow crap in my little town. I couldn't bear the thought of it at the theatre too. :-&

You know that was a joke, right?

We used a tiny 6-year-old and she almost stole "It Takes Two" from the Baker and Baker's Wife. Our cow suit looked like a sheep with mange, though.

If you do use a real actor make sure that he or she doesn't outshine the main characters.

In the production I was in, the cow was the youngest boy in the cast, so everybody adored him, just because he was so darn cute!

I agree ConverseSneaker. High school and community--actor if you want. It's fun. But for a professional production, it'd be a bit campy.

It's not a joke on a day when the wind carries that smell to my front door.
Kiwi

Haha, touche my good man.

That's why I don't prefer an actor as Milky-White. It always happens, without fail.
music is my life!!!

i think it's funnier with a fake one (have you seen the OBC - it's amazing!!!)

also, in a school, i'd be pretty embarassed if i was cast as the cow in a musical.... wouldn't you?
Kiwi

Are you kidding, it's my dream role. JK I need to stop being sarcastic on this topic...

The fake cow actually stole the show in my school's production. Mostly because it looked messed up, you really believed that it was a sick cow. And the person offstage that was doing the mooing; hysterical!

How dare she!...Just kidding... not really...

See, with a live one, it will steal the show. Depending on general direction of the production, ITW can be quite a serious piece (with some comedy, of course). Having a person play the cow is just really childish, and I just think it's out-of-place. This only applies to the "real" ITW, not the Jr. one, because that one is for kids.
