Read this now! Please!Sorry, had to get your attention. I'm pressed for time. Hi, I have Ragtime auditions in a week and I'm trying to figure some things out about the vocal ranges. I think my best shots are Tateh, Harry Houdini, and Father but different sites have listed different ranges. Some say Father is a tenor and Tateh is a baritone, but others switch it. I'm a baritone and my highest note is an F (sorry, I don't know if you call it an F above the bar or something, but it's the note on the highest line) so this is important to know. Thanks a lot for the help.

I like your title.
I'd say that father is a baritone and Tateh is more of a tenor--I believe he only goes up to a g or a g-flat, though, so you still might be able to get that part. Good luck!

Almost positive that the top note for Father is an F. Harry Houdini and Tateh is G. Also little brother is a G. Don't quote me, but I'm pretty sure.

Thank you, do you also happen to know where in the music they hit their highest notes? Or at least what songs their highest notes are in. Thank's again.

Never mind, already had the audition and call back and I am now mother's younger brother of all things! I was really surprised because I wasn't even called back for him, just Harry Houdini and Father. Oh well, thanks for your help everyone!

Ha, well congratulations on being cast. And you're welcome, though I didn't do much. Hope your show is lots of fun!

I will be auditioning soon. Is is possible to have a fat Tateh? Sort of like Zero's Tevya. I'd like to go out for him, but am not quite sure if I fit the bill, so to speak. Also, would Sondheim be okay for an audition piece? What about Gilbert and Sullivan? Any recommendations? Thank you very much.

I seem to remember the Tatah in the version I saw being very Tevya-like. We're performing it at my school, and I had been wondering where we would find someone of that description, but I suppose he can be thin too.

That would be fine. I remember seeing a video of some cast with a larger tateh.

In the movie and the original Broadway cast they had a thinner Tateh, but one of the final three guys that were up for the role at my school was a big guy and although he didn't get it, I personally thought he was the best. Someone on this sight has pictures from a version of Ragtime and they have a larger Tateh as well. All in all, weight isn't an important factor in the role of Tateh as long as you play the role well.

also TychoBrahe, in response to your thoughts on auditions songs, I sang Anthem from "Chess" but I think a Sondheim song would be fine (I was considering using "All I Need is the Girl"). Not sure about Gilbert and Sullivan, but I've only heard the music to Pirates of Penzance. Hope that helps.

Yes, thank you, it is quite helpful. I had a feeling you were familiar with The Pirates of Penzance, Catlike-Tread. Distinctly hearing many fly's footfalls?
