(Re-named) Guess what? The Secret Garden was cancelled.OK, I posted in regards to Secret Garden auditions a while back in the SG forum but nobody answered. Auditions are really soon (end-of-November soon) and I am sort of unsure as to what character to go for. I'm stuck deciding between auditioning for Lily or Martha. I can sing both....but I'm still torn.So...maybe you can help. I've never seen a production of the show and I don't know what Lilys and Marthas traditionally look like....so.. I'm 5'6", average build, dark auburn hair, green/hazel eyes, light peach complexion... Vocal Range: Eb below Middle C to High E (the final note in POTO if I haven't put down the right one)- I can sing the audition songs for the characters easily ("Hold On", "I Heard Someone Crying", and "Come To My Garden/Lift Me Up") Age really isn't much of a factor. The age range is from 8 to adult, the oldest high soprano being around 18 so we're pretty close in age. The show is probably going to be double-cast unless there's not much of a turnout at auditions. If you need me to say anything else to help you help me figure this out, I will. Thank you so much. You have no idea how grateful I would be if you'd help me figure this one out. *Amber* |

I always have liked the part of martha better. Hold on is a beautiful song, and has been one of my favorites since I was little. |

Hazel eyes, you say? Gotta go for Lily, then.
Aside from that, with little soprano competition I'd go for Lily. I'm assuming you don't look too too young? I'm sure there's plenty of teenagers with belter voices who will be going for Martha, so you might as well try for the soprano role. Of course, I'd try to just do both as well as possible and leave it up to the casting panel to decide. |

Most teenagers I've heard can't go low enough for Martha, though, so consider that an option. But make sure you OWN those low notes, or else go for Lily. |

Well, I really have the low notes down well, they're not hard for me to get at all....(Just how low are they? I don't know..)
And I just heard that the girl who is really a good high soprano is probably not going to be able to do the show...So I guess that means I'm going for Lily. There's always the possibility that I can sing both at the auditions because I'm pretty sure we can sing twice for the casting panel... Oh, and this is me. I don't think I look too young, I've been mistaken for 20, 5 years older than I actually am...
Thanks *Amber* |

Lily...Go for Lily. I can see you fitting in that role more than Martha. |

Hold On.mp3Yeah...I know I said that I was going for Lily, but my dad heard me singing "Hold On" and told me that he thinks it sounds better than "I Heard Someone Crying". So, I recorded this version of "Hold On". I'm sorry if the quality or the mp3 is just overallishly crappy, but I need impartiality. I can't record the Lily songs on my computer because they sound horrible with this mic...so this is all I have.http://s53.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1K2OWOYIK9KDS3KXEX3JXS5PSS |

Why don't you record one of Lily's songs aswell to compare?
Your look seems more "Lily" than Martha. I personally think you're just too old. But then again I haven't seen the show. I don't know what Martha's age is supposed to be. |

^ I'll do that. Probably "How Could I Know?" because I like that one the best. And I think it's more in one piece than the rest of Lily's songs. |

Okay, well I've listened to both clips and I'd say Lily. If there's a soprano shortage then you'll hopefully have a good chance, besides you've got the right colour for the part and you've got the high notes down pat. Whoever said there'd be more belters going for Martha is probably right (plus you have to worry about the accent, which can be a b*tch if you're American).
I think also that Lily is generally considered to be a female lead where as Martha is a bit more of a supporting role (but I'm not sure). |

I listened to both and I think you should try for Lily. You have a very nice upper range. |

1) Don't be afraid of vibrato.
2) Lily. |

^What he said. |

Thanks, guys. I've thought it over and I'm def. going for Lily. For the auditions, we put down roles we want to read for so Lily will be my first choice and then Martha, but I'll just sing for Lily.
Thanks! *Amber* |

You're welcome, and best of luck in your auditions! |

Tonight was the first round of auditions. I did sing "Hold On" for one part because I wanted to get my voice warmed up before singing "Come To My Garden". I did both, and read for Martha since they weren't doing readings for Lily. I got complimented on my ability to speak in Yorkshire somewhat. They (people in the audience) said I sounded authentic.
THEN....I GOT A CALLBACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! On Saturday, I am going back and singing the other songs for Lily because the casting people said "they want to hear me sing the other songs for Lily." WOOT |

Update: The second round of auditions were on Wednesday. Altogether 13 people tried out. So that means the show cannot go on. It just can't. I'm so disappointed, I was getting attached to how absolutely beautiful the music is.
On the upside: there's instead going to be a revue with some of the "Secret Garden" songs along with other songs from some other shows, so at least maybe I'll still get to sing something from the show. Oh well. *Amber* Current mood: DISAPPOINTED |

That sucks.
I hate having auditions where we get bad turnouts. |

I went to an audition where not enough people showed up. All auditionees got parts and we filled in the rest via bribes etc.
