What do you not like about THIS clip?


Let's not get into a "well Hearn was better when he was in blah blah" and the same for Lupone. Try to stick to this one performance.

I think Patti is obnoxious in this. I can't quite put my finger on it right now.

Patti sounds like a bird when she says "and I keep thinking".

And I don't mean a pleasant bird, I mean a sea gull.

I'm against cruelty to animals, but god, if there ever was a sea gull for crazy hobos to shoot, it would be Patti Lupone.


That being said, I liked her in the revival. Didn't love her performance, but it wasn't terrible. At least her acting was more understated than in the concert. I understand that in a concert setting, she isn't trying to win acting awards, just sing the music, but she acts the role enough in the concert that it would be far more enjoyable if she acted decently, rather than like said sea gull.

I kind of feel bad for Patti everytime I watch the concert. I get the feeling that she really didn't get the time or freedom to create her own Lovett (since it was a concert and not a full production), so she sort of just had to throw together a bad Angela Lansbury impersonation.

She had more time than you realize. Maybe not as much as a traditional rehearsal period, though.

The concert version started out in New York with the NYC Philharmonic in 2000. It was performed...three nights there I believe.

The concert version seen on the DVD was with the San Fransisco Orchestra in 2001...

I can't remember if this is on the dvd, but Patti Lupone said that she'd been studying the part of Lovett for ten months. Apparently, Sondheim said to her it was the wrong Lovett and I thnk on this showing, he's pretty much right.

George is George and he bludgeons his way through it.

There's no menace or inner tension to the song and it has very little place to go.

Yeah and I think she said that she got the material 9 months before rehearsals started so that she would have time to learn all the music and such.

I liked it

I don't know, I rather enjoyed it. The performance was definitely hammed up for Sweeney fans. But I enjoyed seeing that sexy chemistry between Hearn and Lupone which I haven't seen anywhere else. I also liked the fact that the performers were having as much fun as the audience.

Hearn is quite good but not as brilliant as he is with Angie. LuPone is a mess.
