ragtimeI was lucky enough to be part of the cast of Ragtime which was performed in a workshop situation at the Noda Summer School in Loughborough in 2005. This will probably be the only time that I would be able to do this show as most amateurs can not get enough black people to take part. I saw the show on it's last days performance in the West End and also went to Wolverhampton to see the British Amateur Premiere which was excellent. The had 24 black people on stage in the company. This is an great show with great music but I think will not be performed by amateur companies which is a great shame.[/b][/b] |

It's difficult to put that without sounding racist, isn't it? But I'm not going to clamp down on it for the sake of it, because I know that whatever it sounded like, you probably didn't mean it like that.
We recently performed a selection of songs from Ragtime in a concert called 'A Night on Broadway'. You did it with Noda? I'm suitably impressed. The music is out of this world, and I'd give an arm and a leg to do it. But that's the trouble, when half the cast comprises of an ethnic minority - there simply aren't enough people around to take the parts of the black characters, yet all the white character roles are fought tooth and nail for. *Sigh*. We can call ourselves a country of ethnic diversity (Liverpool European Capital of Culture is a prime example), but we can't cast a musical requiring a half-black cast. Imagine the racial controversy of casting such a show in Britain! I daren't even think of what racial equality activists might say to casting people according to their colour |

you're completely right about it not being performed. I have wanted to do it since I first saw it, i live in NYC and there is just no one, at any level ever doing it. it really is a shame. |

Ragtime showsGuys, there are companys of all levels (including highschools) putting on this show across the nation. At our audition we had plenty of talented men and women to fill the ethnic roles... and we weree turning many more away! Are you in the Omaha NE area? Check out our production at www.omahaplayhouse.com . Kevyn Morrow from the original London Cast will be reprising his role as Colehouse. |
