Questions about the Cabaret movieDear Musicals.Net Posters,
I have the movie version of Cabaret, and (SPOILERS)
throughout the movie, the MC makes tons of lewd faces at Sally Bowles. The MC even whispers something unintelligible to her before she goes onstage to perform "Mein Herr".
I don't understand the MC's intentions. The MC seems to know Sally really well, and yet, he seems to be goading her throughout the movie. Is he really a mean, cruel man who represents the future hell that Germany will have to live through? Is he simply trying to convince Sally to be more realistic about both her life and the state of the country? Is he trying to bully Sally into staying at the Kit Kat Club because she's the club's biggest financial draw? Is he Sally's closest lover, who feels as though he knows her better than anyone else? Is $ally just a $ sign to the MC, or is he really looking out for her interests? The MC and Sally really seem to know each other personally, and yet, the MC seems to be continually giving Sally a bad time.
Thanks in advance for your ideas, opinions, etc.

I have not seen the movie version in ages, but nonetheless, here's what I think;
I've always perceived their relationship to be more business than anything. However, given Sally's nature [as well as that of the MC's], it wouldn't be surprising if something happened between them.
Really, I just think there to rake in money for the club.
[and that just goes for the film, because I could bore you to death analyzing their relationship in the play. ]

I wouldn't be surprised if they'd done the hankypanky.

No, I don't think they're sleeping together. From the way they interact (for example, making faces), it does seem like they're good friends. They work together, and they've bonded over that. You kind of have to bond a bit when you're work requires you to play lovers on stage. But I don't get anything from their interactions that makes me think they're actually sleeping together.

I think you're supposed to be unsure as to what the extent of their relationship is. I don't think they are sleeping together, but I wouldn't be suprised if their relationship sometimes borders on being inappropriate, just by the faces that the Emcee makes at her throughout
