question bout mimi

Does she know Roger has HIV or is she just totally willing to give it to him, considering she has i t and she tries to seduce him.
jcstar

Referencing "La Vie Boheme"

MIMI: (beeper goes off) AZT break...
ROGER: You?
MIMI: Me. You?
ROGER: Mimi...

That's when they discover each other is HIV positive.

Does anyone know what Mimi means by "I'm lillin'..." in Light My Candle?

Andy.
broadwaybaby246

i think she means shes craving it...
OzHair

The line is "I'm illin'"

I'm illing. I'm feeling ill from the need to have a fix.

Smile
jcstar

Ok. I guess it's the way I hear Daphnie say the line.

Andy.

^ I had to Google the lyrics to figure out what Daphne was saying.

It is notable that Mimi doesn't mention she has AIDS before attempting to seduce Roger (Out Tonight).
broadway_baby

however, in light my candle the two of them may have had suspicions of each other, when they both reveal that they have (mimi) or had (roger) an addiction

She doesn't know that he has AIDS and I kinda doubt she would have let it go so far to acutally give him AIDS
audreydarling

I think she just wanted to get Roger out of the house..knowing she has AIDS..she does kiss him..but I don't think they would have gone farther..Roger's AIDS is kind of what holds him back because he doesn't want to lose someone again..and he is suspicious about mimi's drug use..and I think "I'm illing" has to do with need of her vice.."I'm illing I had it when I walked in the door..it was pure..is it on the floor" etc.
BroadwayBaby0202

Actually, "illin'" is slang for being sure about something. When Mimi says "I'm illin' I had it when I walked in the door" it meant that she knew that she had her "stash" when she walked into Roger's apartment. Another way to say that line would be "I know I had it when I walked in the door." Sorry, I didn't mean to be rude by correcting you, I was just letting you know what "illin'" meant. Smile
qpidsangel

"illin" means she was craving her drug.
BroadwayBaby0202

The word illin' doesn't have anything to do with drugs; it's slang for knowing something (which I said already)...it doesn't make sense in the sentence anyway. "I'm craving, I had it when I walked in the door."
qpidsangel

You're wrong. give up. Take it from someone who knows

Don't misquote, that's when people get in trouble. The full quote is...
Mimi:"I think that I dropped my stash"

Roger:"I think I've seen you out and about, when I used to go out. Your candle's out"

Mimi:"I'm illin', I had it when I walked in the door, It was pure! Is it on the floor?"

She's obviously talking about her baggie she dropped. Neither one of them have any idea the other has HIV/AIDS until, like quoted above, right before "I Should Tell You".
BroadwayBaby0202

No, I'm not wrong. You're misusing the word illin'. It's slang and no matter how well you know the story of Rent, it won't matter. You just assumed that definition. Maybe you should look it up... Oh, and I didn't misquote the line. I just used the word craving in the place of illin' to show you how dumb it sounded.
<3Wilson<3

What's the point of fighting? No one actually knows what Jonathan Larson meant when he used "illin", sure it could be a craving or a slang, but you actually don't know. So no need to fight Very Happy . I personally think that she is craving her drug because of the way she is looking for her stash and context clues.

Yes, you're wrong. Honey I don't need much knowledge about RENT to understand Mimi. Honey I've been on the drug scene, A lot of people I know are strippers. Here is a more in depth definition of what "illin'" means.

illin'- An addict who is going through withdrawl symptoms. Beginning to feel sick from lack of substance. Coming from the word "ill" for feeling sick. Other terms used: "got the sickness".

Illin' also has many, many other definitions, but this is the one that fits best in this use. And no before you say something, "knowing" is not one of those definitions.

I do not assume things, I know them.

I said misquoted, because you didn't use the other lines surrounding the sentence in question

And you are correct "craving" and "illin" are not interchangeable in sentences, but they do have a similar meaning which is what I was trying to get across.

Would you like me to go in depth about how I know Mimi is withdrawling?
<3Wilson<3

Not trying to come off like a bitch or rude or anything, could you explain why you think she is withdrawing. I never thought of that, and it seems like an interesting concept.
qpidsangel

Sure.

Light My Candle
I used to shiver like that
I have no heat
I told you
I used to sweat
I got a cold
uh huh
I used to be a junkie
Now and then I like to
Uh huh
Feel good

All common withdrawl symptoms, not longterm drug use problems, like people tend to believe about this part

Christmas Bells
I'm willin'
I'm illin'
I gotta get my sickness off
<3Wilson<3

That makes sense I would have never thought of that. I alwasy assumed she was like and constant user, no going through withdrawl.

Yeah he does....they give you hints all throughout the beginning of the movie, don't know about the play. Collins invites Roger to life support then tells Mark it's not just for people with AIDS, not to Roger. Then Roger finally goes and comes in on Will I Lose My Dignity? showing that he finally can face the fact that he's living with AIDS

The question was "Does Mimi know Roger had AIDS before she tried to seduce him" not "Does Roger know he has AIDS." In both the stage show and the movie, yes Roger does know.

Laughing d'oh! Applause

That actually made me laugh out loud!! Very Happy
