Question about the song, 'Legally Blonde'

I guess I don't really understand the term, 'legally blonde'. I believe it's a play on words ("blonde" instead of "blind"). But in the first version of the song is all "Boo hoo back to legally blonde," but then in the next scene everyone's like, "Hooray! She's legally blonde!" Like, at first it's a bad thing to be legally blonde, then it's awesome.

For the record, I haven't seen the show live, and I didn't catch it on MTV or watch it online, so I'm pretty much speaking out of context, here.

Thanks guys! Smile

She's cherishing something that at first condemned her. Before, all she was was "blonde" to everybody - she couldn't prove that she was more than just a blonde. In the end, though, she seems to have embraced the word and used it to give her extra power. She is legally blonde, oh yeah!

Do you understand?

I always thought "legally" was 'cos she's a lawyer and "blonde" is 'cos she's blonde.

Thats the meaning on the surface.

It's pun-like. If you watch the beginning of the movie (or even the musical) it is made for Elle to look like a complete idiot and stupid, which is usually what a blonde is thought of. Then when she goes to Harvard, she looks even more ridiculous and couldn't figure out any of the legal info. She was Legally (used for law-terms) Blonde (being stupid). Like, she was dumb with law. Then she actually studies and believes she does well. Then Callahan reveals his motive of pushing her to the top of the law class was not done because of her brains, but her looks. Then she maybe believes she actually is Legally Blonde and is nothing more than that. Then she gets told by Vivianne that it isnt true and that she actually is smart and Callahan is an ass. She embraces the term then and says "Yeah, I may be Legally Blonde. Whatchu gonna do about it?" Well, she doesn't actually say that, but she could go ghetto-fabulous on them...

In conclusion, the first response was absolutely correct and mine was just a nice little add-on.
