Question About Playing Meg Giry

Is it required for the actress to be on pointe in this role, considering Meg is a ballet dancer? I know there have been Christines who weren't on pointe when they danced, but is it a requirement for Meg?

Yes, Meg must be a strong classical ballet dancer, and dancing en pointe is a definitive requirement. I don't think there has ever been a Meg not dancing en pointe, but Meg isn't the solo dancer she originally was.

When POTO opened in West End in 1986, Meg and Christine were the lead dancers in Hannibal (Sarah Brightman was a trained pointe dancer). Meg also danced the solo part in the Il Muto ballet - the sylvian glade with the blonde wig, entering later and doing a solo part, used to be Meg. This required a strong dancer in the role as Meg. But this is not necessarily the case today - Christine and Meg are no longer solo dancers in Hannibal (except in Japan), and Meg is often just a regular dancer in the Il Muto ballet.

She still needs to dance en pointe, though. Smile

Some, but it's not required. Except in Japan.
