Question About Colleen Sexton

It might be just me, but I noticed that on the Jekyll & Hyde DVD (the stage recording) Colleen Sexton (Lucy) has a tendency to hold her stomach sometimes when she sings. Does anyone know why? (It's probably not important, but I'm just curious.)

Well, I didn't notice Collen doing anything. Colleen, on the other hand...
Salome

Okay, okay, I made a tiny spelling error! Rolling Eyes

No clue.
Da_Dark_Dude

maybe she was doin some sorta body language thing to emphasise her lonliness, maybe hyde got her pregnant, maybe im talking sh*t

It could just be an unconcious thing she does as an actor, or, on the converse, a leading gesture for her character. I know I sometimes hold my stomach if I'm not thinking about it, after years of practicing breathing with one hand on the stomach, one on the chest. If you look around, lot's of other performers have distinctive things they do with their body. Have you seen her do it in other roles?

Then why did she do it in "Good 'n' Evil?" That song was before she met Hyde. I thought that might've been pregnant in real life, but now I'm probably talking sh*t.
Ghost

I've seen girls do it alot while singing.

It's pretty an unconcious habit.

Gripping Tummy When Singing:It is a universal Musical Theatre thing that us girls do. Moreso the 'Leading Ladies' e.g: Colleen, Linzi Hateley, Julie Alanah Brighten, etc etc.......

I was told never to do it, so one day, for a laugh, and I was bored at an audition, I did it and someone said I looked very professional. That someone was on the panel so I also got several recalls for a west end show because of it so Ladies: Grip away!!!!

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Well, if she doesn't do it in her other roles, it's probably just some really weird leading gesture. Doesn't mean it's concious, though; if a character is trully internalized, the gestures come naturally, not through logic.
Salome

I know Colleen,I can always ask her.

Gasp! Wow, I'm impressed. (I'm not being a smart-alec or anything, I was just surprised that your friend's cousin is Colleen Sexton! Shocked)
The Very Angry Woman

Actors often have families, too.

nothing impressive. she is just a struggling actress like most of us. Much more talent in her little finger than Linda Eder has in her whole body though.
Jekkienumber24601

agreed. lol. She's the standby for Elphaba on the Wicked tour right now. She's very talented as Lucy and very nice to look at, lol

Pardon my enthusiasm, I just admire her a lot, and I loved her performance as Lucy in J&H. And I agree, I certainly like Colleen a lot better than Linda.
Salome

yes. Coleen turned a shitty part in a shitty show into something memorable.

I think that it's just an unconcious thing....because I always do it too... Very Happy
It's mechanical for me... I hold my stomach when I sing.

And let me add... she wears a corset...AND IT'S REALLY UNCOMFORTABLE...maybe this is the matter... Very Happy

Hey guys!
I just saw her two weeks ago, on the Wicked tour. I had read this thread before, so I was looking to see if she did it, and well, she did. I think it's an unconscious thing she does. I also noticed on the J&H DVD that she takes in air through her nose and not her mouth. I thought that was odd, since I have yet to do that in my vocal lessons, but hey, if it works, then yeah, by all means. Maybe I just haven't gotten to that technique yet. She did that during the show as well. Don't get me wrong, btw, because Coleen is my fav. actress/singer. She's so rounded in her characters, that they become real, as they should. Very Happy Okay, well, I just thought I'd share that with y'all. Take care!

Yeah, because not all of the words you say start with your mouth open.

Am I right? I've had a little training, but I'm not 100% sure.
