Psst! WSS 50TH ANNIVERSARY!

Hey, did you guys hear about the 50th anniversary production of West
Side Story being done at Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre? I heard this
show's going to be awesome-- a full orchestra and a cast of 43 doing the
original Jerome Robbins choreography! Plus, some of the dancers are from
Spectrum Dance Company. Something's coming, something good---May 26 to
June 17!

That looks like a gorgeous production! Too bad I don't live in Washington D:

All is good, too bad you can't see the production. Spread the good news anyhow! Smile

My grandparents saw the original run back in 1957...I try not to be jealous...another relative of mine saw the original run of My Fair Lady with Rex Harrison still intact...

Would love to, but I live closer to D.C...not state. Laughing

Sony is releasing a WSS story tribute album in August. I don't know about the other tracks, but Hugh Panaro and Kristin Chenoweth recording "Tonight" for it.

I do quite like Kristin but she will sound crap in this song.

It was Salome replying with EWWWW that I found hilarious. lol

Does anyone know if this show will be getting recorded maybe?

I'm not much of a Kristin fan myself...I'm only keeping track of this project because of Hugh's involvement.

What Is This Feeling?

wow is it really 50 years? My school did it this year for the musical, and it honestly was my first time really having an interaction with the show. So cool! Happy 50th Anniversery West Side Story!

Sept. 26= True Anniversary!

Dear West Side Story Fans,

September 26th is the date of the true Anniversary of West Side Story, so feel free to take a moment on that day to remember one of the best musicals ever created!
Cool

Just a follow-up on the tribute album....it's going to be called "A Place For Us." I believe it's now set for release a month from yesterday...on August 28...but I'm waiting for my contact at the Sony to confirm it and to let me know who else is on the recording.

Album...

The album is available as a pre-order on Amazon, with a release date of 4th September. The track listing is as follows:

1. Maria - Johnny Mathis
2. Somewhere - Dave Brubeck
3. Tonight - Andy Williams
4. Something's Coming - Brian Stokes Mitchell
5. I Have A Love / One Hand, One Heart - Barbra Streisand/Johnny Mathis
6. I Feel Pretty - Julie Andrews
7. Gee, Officer Krupke - Andre Previn
8. America - Canadian Brass
9. One Hand, One Heart - Neil Diamond
10. I Have A Love - Art Garfunkel
11. Maria - Joshua Bell
12. Tonight - Kristin Chenoweth/Hugh Panaro
13. Cool - Eldar

So it's a compilation, which is nice - in some ways. But I wouldn't have minded a completely new set of recordings by contemporary musical theatre artists.

Or even a well-cast studio recording. Wink

Which is why I'm glad my contact at Sony said it's also going to be available on iTunes. I really don't want an album full of recordings I've heard before. There are only three tracks I want, aside from the obvious one.

Well, lookie what I found! A 50th Anniversary Recording, with contemporary musical theatre artists. Alas, the reviews I seem to be finding are good but not ecstatic. I wonder if there will ever be a recording of the show that truly rivals the OBC.

WSS 50th Anniversary Blurb

Can you believe West Side Story opened September 26, 1957? The scary thing is that even 50 years later, the subject matter is so timely!

I wrote a blurb about it at Man In Chair
with quotes from the original stars and reviews of the Broadway opening if you want to read more.
