Prom Dresses

OK, I think I've got it down to these two dresses. I'm going to go try them on again with my friends, but I want some outside opinions. Vote.

Dress 1

Dress 2
ChingLing

I like the style of the brown one around the bust and the waist but which colour looks best on you?
broadwaychild

what color is your hair and how long is it?
LaurelDP

I don't like the neckline on the second one.
Hermie

one
Mel AKA Maureen

Do the...I feel a song coming on...

"Green green dress!"

PS, Does it have 20 buttons and a strap?
MrsJamieWellerstein

The second one.
broadwaychild

ooh ooh idea.

which model do u look most like?
Tovers

I voted for one - but it depends on your hair colour, complexion, etc

I shudder to think of how much either of those dresses is going to cost

My hair is dark brown and shoulder length. Go look at the picture thread. I'm fair complected (sp?), but I'll tan for prom. A little anyway.

NEVER WEAR BROWN IN THE SPRING! IT IS A FALL COLOR!!!

Green, green, green. Go green, damnit. Spring! Bright colors!

Really people! Learn your seasons!

*cowers in her corner* Sorry... I just picked what I thought was pretty now. I get sick of everyone wearing pink and red with tons of beading to prom.

LOL, not your fault! You want to be unique? Go for a yellow or a fresh bone color (but only if it's shiny.) Let me find you some fun examples.

I'll be back.
Deester

there was an article in Cosmo where they surveyed thousands of men.
Surveys showed that the color men find women least attractive in is green.
But, I don't prefer the brown dress either. If you have a light complexion, you should definitely be going with bright, airy colors.

I'll help you find examples, Jenny!

^This one might be my favorite!

^The bodice on this one is fantastic. Go to the site that has this and check out the closeup of the bodice!

Again, zoom in on this bodice! Little details.

None are pink, but they're all fresh looking, very springy. Some people may disagree, but I say stay AWAY from the black and white dresses. That's a homecoming type dress. No matter how many they may have on a prom dress website, steer clear!
Jennyanydots

OH! And another thing!

BRONZER! Don't use it or else you'll look as oompa loompa-ish as the models in these pictures. Just tan with an accelerator. Bronzer makes you look like trash.

I like either of those two, particularly the one from the weblink.
Mel AKA Maureen

Jenny posted this dress

I like it a lot.
Nudelkopf

^^ That's the one I was talking about. Although the back view makes the bum look really odd.

Deester

Jenny gave you some classic dresses with a big skirt, so I thought I'd give you some slinkier sexier options for contrast.

Jennyanydots

But then again, you don't want anything too bold. You want light, fresh colors! Think pastels. It's prom. Not homecoming. Save bolds, black and white, and browns for the Fall, when richer colors are more acceptable!
lakmé

I wore black to prom.

My date wore light blue though. He looked HOT.

I wore black too, with white elbow length gloves and a pearl choker. It was Audrey Hepburn night!

From what we were taught at the dress shop I worked in, it's more about the material than it is the actual color. Black can be worn year round, but heavier fabrics should be saved for the fall and winter, while lighter materials should be used in the spring and summer.

I'm specifically talking about a dress with both black and white on it. Black dresses can work, if they're solid, but not with the white in them. I see those as more of a colder weather type gown.

PS. Love the Audrey style!

I LOVE AUDREY HEPBURN!! As a child I used to get those rubber washing gloves and dress up pretending to be her. My father didn't appreciate me wearing lipstick though Confused
lakmé

Mine was black strapless and really gorgeous.

Tragically I don't fit in it anymore.

Oh wait, that's not tragic. That's fantastic.

I should get that sucker taken in.

I wore a black and white dress to prom last year. Personally, color doesn't really matter much to me, I just pick whatever I like best, hehehe.

But the one that Mel put up, the blue with the white underneath, that's really pretty!

Is there some sort of unwritten rule about the length of prom dresses? I've always thought that floor-length is best. I don't think i'd ever wear a short dress to prom.

Dress 1

Dress 2

Dear nat915,

I can't really cast a vote in the poll, because I can't make up my mind about which dress I like better. These are my thoughts about the two dresses:

The Green Dress: This dress is slinky, bright, and dramatic in a casual, blingy sort of way. I think that this dress would work well on someone who was bold, daring, and wanted to show off tons of cleavage. This dress could be accessorized with strappy heels, blingy jewelry, and a purse that's adorned with a sparkly ornament.

The Brown Dress: This dress is chocolatey, enticingly modest, and dramatic in a more...well...dramatic way. I think that this dress would work well on someone who was dramatic, modest, and wanted to show off their bustline without actually exposing too much of their bust. Since this dress is so dramatic, I'd accessorize it with tall, chocolate brown heels (perhaps old-fashioned style heels), some classic gold jewelry, and an Oscar-worthy, satin-smooth wrap in either chocolate brown, cream, gold, navy blue, or orange.

Both of the dresses are flowing, and they both appear to be waistless. I think that the brown dress should be worn with shoes that feature very high heels, as the dress' long, dramatic hem reaches the floor.

I wish you luck in choosing that perfect dress.
Cool
wicked_diva

My favorites were the last three Jenny posted, especially that last one with the plaid. Because then not only do you look pretty, you look really cute, too, and it doesn't seem like something many other people would be wearing. Of course, if money is a concern, you could make your own, and then it would definitely be original. I made mine for Winter Ball. It cost around $85, including the pattern, and took me less than 10 hours to complete.

yeah dont worry ur not the only one...im kinda 13...**sigh**
lakmé

(prom's overrated...if you put too much stake in it, it will disappoint you. so anticipating it from the age of 5 or so is probably not a good idea. Wink )
Annie

I agree with Lakmé. My prom was really disappointing, and quite depressing for me. (but I won't get into that.) Not to get you down on it, though! It is fun for most, but I agree that no body should hype it up too much in their minds.

ANYWAY...

I like the green dress! I agree that it depends on your complexion, hair, whatever...but I do like it a lot more than the brown one. I like the playfulness idea over the sultry, dramatic one in general. But yeah, I really like the green one. It's gorgeous, wish I'd had one like it for my prom! (I had an amber halter-topped dress cut just below the knee in front, and a bit longer in the back. It was the same sort of shiny fabric, but not as nice by far. I chose it to go with my green eyes and curly brown hair. Wow, you really didn't need to know that. I'll stop talking now.)

Green one!

this would also be pretty......yes it is kinda pink but it's a pretty shade of pink

between the two dresses you had listed- I like the first one simply because the cut looks like it would be more flattering[/url]
~Bal~

I like the first one better except for the diamond-y thingy... I think it looks kind of tacky.

And since everyone's posting pictures...

Here's a picture of me in mine, just to show the dress off. It's different than most of the ones posted... It's a mermaid dress, that made me look as if I had a WONDERFUL figure.

Please ignore my date. It was his grad, and he didn't know to wear a tie.

Or tuck his shirt in.
Roger's Chica

Oh, Bal, I love your dress! It matches mine!

(Me and my brother and my boyfriend... there's better pictures, but you can see the whole dress in this one.)
The REAL Ciaron

I show you people Vera Wang and you choose Macy's!!!

When will you learn?
MrsJamieWellerstein

We will learn when we get either money or get really skilled at theft.
what_the_heck013

I like the green one.

Our prom was themed "Masquerade"/Phantom of the Opera so you can imagine how cool some of the dresses were.

Isn't is a bit early for this, though?
Roger's Chica

I wouldn't think it's too early. I bought my dress in late Feb (I think) for a June 4th grad and I was lucky that there was my size in the store, because I would have got it JUST before grad and might not have had time for alterations if I needed to order a different size or colour.

Alterations are necessary (tailoring makes EVERYTHING look better and like you spent more on it), but very very time consumming.
MrsJamieWellerstein

It is NEVER too early to prom-shop.
Roger's Chica

Or too late.

So what if I graduated two years ago... I can still try on dresses. Wink

You don't need money. You need to be a smart shopper. I am sure all these low level designers look at Veras collections and copy them.

dont get me wrong, I LOVE Vera but for a high school prom....... it costs enough with all the dinner and transportation and after the party-party
Macys is a bit more in the price range of a student.........
I'm always having to get a new formal dress for the events i sing at (I'll never wear a dress twice if I know the same people will be there) so I've now started shopping at Ross and Value Village for formal wear (and found some darn good stuff)
(these arnt great pictures of my dresses but it gives an idea)

$19 at Ross

$7 at Value Village

$15 at Value Village
Nudelkopf

^^ Woah, cheap. That's in American currency correct?

I'm going to come out of lurkage just to say that Ciaron clearly has the best taste in fashion and knows his designers. You should all listen to him. He also likes Rufus Wainwright. Respect.

I think it's great that you shop around for good deals. I'm sure having to purchase yet another dress for another occasion adds-up and for God's sake you're a student, heehee! I'm going through the same (not having to get a dress! I meant college, haha) and even though I'm a bit older than ya'll and probably have a lot more money saved than the average college student, it still gets tight, especially at the end of the month. Buying within one's means should take precedence over buying designer clothing, in my opinion. You're very pretty and you have good taste. Those outfits look great on you regardless of the price or label.

Listen to Ciaron when you win the lottery, haha.
dramatic_mizfit

^ Exactly. Very Happy
Aphrodite

i like the brown
the diamondy thing is distracting and unnattractive on the green one, in my opinion.
Stargazer

I, personally, really like the green one. When I went to find dresses last year I couldn't find a decent green one... The only one I found was a hunter green and it was too big for me. I was going to get a pretty light purple and white dress but ended up getting this dress:

http://sgkt.homestead.com/files/Prom/us.JPG
(I'm the one second from the right)

My Junior year dress was a plum color... It was on sale. I got a pair of clear shoes with sparkles on them and so I was able to splurg on my prom dress for my senior year because I was reusing my shoes. (My junior year my dress cost 34 dollars then 24 for the shoes... I went shoe shopping with my two drama teachers.. oh dear goodness was that crazy... lol. My senior year I spent 189 on my dress so Smile)

I meant to mention on the other thread before it went terribly off-track... your new headshots are phenomenal- natural but gorgeous. You are one pretty pretty girl.
wicked_diva

This is the dress I made for Winter Ball. As I said before it only cost about $85. (I'm the one in the blue)

Nudelkopf

Awesome dress wicked_diva! You seriously made that? I'm so glad males are only expected to wear a suity thing!
B3TA07

Me too. Although they sometimes get boring. But, unlike that one girl in wicked_diva's picture, we can't wear dresses.

Not that I look good in dresses.

She does look rather pretty though. At first I mistook her for a man but a second look cleared it up.
nat915

Ciaron is pretty close to what I want. I don't like ball dresses or dresses with too much beading. I just want something simple and slinky. I'm tall and lanky, I'll just go with that. I also want something in a richer color (I know, it's spring...) because everyone goes to prom wearing bright colors. I'm going to start tanning for prom soon anyway, so I'll be much darker complected than I am now. I went and tried on dresses the other day and quit because nothing looked right. It's depressing. They don't carry dresses in my size. I know you have them altered, but these weren't even close. There was no way to tell what that dress would look like on. I'm a 2 or 4 and I was trying on 10s. Ugh. Anyway, thanks everyone for all you're advice. When I finally pick a dress, I'll post a picture.
