problem with the ultimate version dvd

I just found the ultimate version of Cats buried in the closet of a house turned almost apartments, just left by someone who was in a real hurry to get out of here (as most people who have lived here have been, it's amazing the things that are piling up in the garage). I bought the vhs version way back before dvd's were invented (and I'm only 22!), and I've watched it enough times to know if so much as the length of a fade were different between the two, but I seem to be having a more annoying problem. Some sounds are strangely missing. My girlfriend and I are arguing about the reason, and while she's convinced they just cut the soundtrack weird, it's just too damn weird to be a bunch of really bad decisions or horrible mistakes. A lot of the music is too quiet in strange places, going so far as to fade almost completely out in the middle of songs and fade back in seconds later, but the real problem is mostly in the Awful Battle, where half the barks aren't heard at all (they just open their mouths and nothing comes out!) and some are just barks, but no human voices. Then at the end, when Rum Tum Tugger comes back on to do his little bit on the bagpipes there's no sound there either! The video is still there, but no sound.
I'm convinced this is a problem with the surround, as we're playing it on a laptop and we don't have extra speakers, but my girlfriend is adamant that there is nothing wrong with her computer cause this has never happened before. I can also understand if it's a problem with the audio coding on the disk so that it just won't play on anything without 5 speakers, but I'm hoping (not just for the sake of getting to watch it problem free on another computer or tv Razz) that it's her computer. Her precious baby that can do no wrong (it's that vista it's been hanging out with, such a bad influence).

There is a problem with the stereo sound. Try it on an ordinary DVD player on the tv, or change the setup of the dvd in the computer from 5.1 to stereo sound.
