Problem With COMPANYI adore Company. So many of Sondheim's greatest songs are from this musical ("Another Hundred People", "The Ladies Who Lunch", "Side by Side"), but I feel that some of these songs have a bit of a problem. The musical takes place in either the 70's or the 90's, but some of the songs (well, just "What Would We Do Without You?", "Bobby Baby" and "You Can Drive a Person Crazy") don't seem believeable that they are from either of those decades. Now, I'm not saying it should be disco music... it's just that some of those songs seem more like dream sequences.

Well, some people would say the main body of the show one big dream sequence!
At any rate, those songs you mentioned are written to reflect the styles of other song styles from the past - it's called pastiche - and the use of these styles helps (as much as the lyrics, staging and performances) to comment on the situations at hand. The intention behind the music is as important as anything else. Sondheim didn't randomly pick the music just because it sounds nice or only to create setting - the work is carefully crafted to take audiences beyond the obvious.
