Probably a stupid question?

Will the Lion King rights come out soon? Like in the next two or three years? Just asking... cuz it would be AMAZING to do it.

Not a stupid question at all! Everybody asks this question about various shows! Smile

As to answers, it's hard to say. Amateur rights for Beauty and the Beast came out three (??) years after it opened on Broadway, and it's been more than that for the Lion King, which is doing just as successfully. It's actually pretty early on in the run to talk about releasing rights, if you ask me, but when they do come out they won't be cheap.

Sorry if this made no sense. Embarassed

I would say that the rights for The Lion King wont be out for a long time. Its a hard show to mount, and Julie Taymor did a wonderful job created everything for it. I wouldn't hold my breathe if I was you.

Yeah, I wouldn't count on it any time soon. Frankly, I don't want the rights to come out because watching what high schools do to those costumes would be appaling.

Another question. How do they determine when to release the rights? I would assume that shows that are not on Broadway any longer would release their rights in order to continue making money but some shows stay on broadway for forever. Anyone have any ideas?

I don't know, I assume it's just when they decide to release the rights - Phantom of the Opera has been on Broadway 18 odd years and it looks like the rights still are not going to be released for ages. Rent, on the other hand, has been on Broadway just over 10 years and the rights have already been released. Fingers crossed for The Lion King, though, that would be such a fun show to be in!
