Preferred "Tommy" recording

Which is your preferred recording of "Tommy"?
Brother Marvin Hinten, S.

My favorite is the movie soundtrack, because it was the first to flesh out the story more, unlike the dissatisfying Broadway production.
Beagle On Stage

I prefer the Broadway production because it has the most plot. The movie came closer than, say, the original concept recording, but it's still mainly a bunch of songs with the same characters. You have a random Christmas morning leading into everyone worshipping Marilyn Monroe, then suddenly Tina Turner shows up high as a kite and sings a song, turning Roger Dahltrey into a skeleton. Wheras in the Broadway show, the Christmas scene leads into the disasterous babysitting episodes, and those lead right into the pinball thing. Easier to follow. Also, Mrs. Walker doesn't go mad and roll around in beans.

Doesn't matter to me. NOTHING tops the Who's original version!

the who's original was good, but the vocals weren't varied enough. it was more difficult to tell characters apart, espec if u had never heard it before. also the movie soundtrack i liked better for pinball wizard, which is a cool song.
out of interest who owns what in what format?
I own the who original - vinyl
& the soundtrack - vinyl

That's because The Who didn't want guest performers on the record. They wanted to do it all by themselves. Townhend also quashed the idea of bringing in an orchestra to play on the original album.

I love the original album, because of the simplicity of the music. And Moon's drumming, of course.

Yeah...I loved the original album before hearing any other versions of it. One of the best rock albums ever. While other recordings are decent enough, the arrangements are so perfect on the original, and much more "rock" than subsequent versions.

I'm a total ho for the motion picture soundtrack.

Ann Margaret is the best Mrs. Walker ever. Her deep mooing voice is just amazing for a rock opera.

Sm**chies!

I love the Broadway Cast Recording, altough I think Pinball Wizard on the original The Who album is much better.

On the film soundtrack, has anyone noticed Elton John playing "I Can't Explain" during the solos? I just noticed it!

The Who's original is so much better than the others...

The Canadian version of THE WHO'S TOMMY was much beter than the Broadway cast (Townshend even said he was a big fan of the Toronto company). I'm not saying the Broadway cast was bad... they weren't. The Canadian cast just had more umph to it.

I met Tyley Ross (Toronto's Tommy) a few months ago and he said that there were pplans to record a full Canadian cast recording, but Townshend was not allowed to go ahead with it. Tyley has said that there is a reason ehy, but he didn't tell me.

"The Who" original concept recording.

I looooooooove Roger Daltrey singing "Christmas" and I love Pete Townshend's "The Acid Queen".
KY CANNIBAL

Original concept, without a doubt is better. Townsend was a genius in every way - singing, musically, writing - and the Who with the entire movie cast captured what he intended to do perfectly.
Tom

The 1969 original is the ONLY Tommy that matters!

And yet, in all the Who and Townshend interviews I have seen, The Who is always referred to as a pop band/group. Never a rock band.

Now, I know that Daltrey hated the Broadway version. When he saw the Canadian cast, he said that they got it right.

Long Live Rock! - Pete Townshend
jcstar

Yes, but he always referred to The Who as a pop group. Watch THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT. He never says that they're a rock band.

The Who was a singles band when they started. They were a "pop" band in the 60's. But their 3 major concept albums (Tommy, Who's Next and Quadraphenia) changed that. Ideas changed in the 60's about music. All "teen music" was called pop or rock-n-roll. As the music was taken more seriously "Rock" became the term to describe the music, leaving the term pop to become a perjorative.

Since 1969, Tommy was called a Rock-Opera, even by Townshend. I have never heard anyone refer to Tommy as a Pop-Opera. Tommy is rock and the Who were pioneers of arena rock of the 1970's.
