Pop vs. SodaWhen referring to a carbonated beverage, what do you say? I personally, say soda. Most people where I'm from say pop. It may be unimportant to you, but it's a burning question in my mind. Also, I'm very bored. |

Soda. I know some people who say "Coke" when referring to a carbonated beverage.

I call them soft drinks.
http://www.popvssoda.com/countystats/total-county.html has a nice map. |

^^ Same. Soft drink. Most children, however, call it a fizzy drink.

I usually call it soda. I think my roommate calls it pop. I have heard people call it 'soda-pop' before too.

I guess I'd say soft drinks, but I generally just use the word "juice" to mean anything drinkable.

"Fizzy drink" (England).

I think they call it "tonic" in MA or VT. Somewhere near Connecticut. I call it soda.
| thegoodseed |
I say soda because my mom lived in Connecticut, and that's how she always said it, so I picked it up from her. Mostly everyone around here (Rochester, NY) says pop, though.
I have heard of people around Boston calling it "tonic", like MzGalinda said. |

That's where I got the idea. |

Depends where in MA. thegoodseed mentioned they call it "tonic" in Boston, but where me and my mom grew up, in North Adams (about as far west from Boston as you can be without leaving the state) it's just called soda. Where I lived in Upstate NY it was "soda" too. Ever since I moved out to CO, though, it's "pop". I still call it soda though. |

Most of the time I'll say Coke, regardless of whether or not it actually is Coke. Either that or soda.

Right here in upstate New York we call it soda.

I call it coke. No matter what it is. Don't know why. It just happens. It's not a regional think because all my friends get confused.

Or Soda Pop. |

I was a big POP person till I lived in Pittsburgh where eventually SODA took over. SO now I am a soda guy
| EponineGiry |
I'm in suburban D.C. East Coast of the U.S. calls it soda for the most part.
| Pounce |
Are you sure? I used to live in Pittsburgh and I'm sure Pittsburgh is POP country. |
||||
| belleboi80 |
It is possible it is just because all my friends teher were east coasters |

'Coke' is in use then? I've heard stories from my parents about Americans not understanding the word 'coke' but only 'cola', I can assume that's passed then?
| Fogeyman |
I use soda, pop, and coke interchangeably.
When I was a kid growing up we always called it "coke," no matter what it was. Since I've lived in so many places of the country, I've picked up all of them. |

I usually only call drinks 'Coke' or 'Cola' when it's actually a cola-type drink. In fact, when referring to Sodas or Pops or Squash or softdrink (blah blah blah) I just use the name of the drink. Eg. Lemonade, Fanta, Coke, Orange drink etc
| dramatic_mizfit |
I don't believe I've ever heard anyone use the term "cola" around here. |

This was New York in the 1970s to be fair, lol. |

I call it soda. My friends call it soda. My sister calls everything Pepsi, regardless of brand or type. And she's the one in college o.O
My grandparents call it tonic. Welcome to Somerville, MA, folks. |

I either say Soda, Soda Pop or Sodie... my daddy likes to call it Sodie and so did my grandparents. My assistant manager calls it Coke.. because she knows IMOS has Pepsi but she still calls it Coke... lol.

I've always said soda, and I don't think I'll ever use "pop". I call my dad "pop" sometimes...

I say "pop." I don't care if people say "Coke", but if they "soda" it really starts to bother me. "Soda-pop" just puts me over the edge. |
