pirates of penzance

Hi, I am a 17 year old 2nd tenor auditioning for Pirates of Penzance at a local community theater. I need sixteen bars of an appropriate song. Should it be something from another gilbert and sullivan show?

I will also be auditioning for West Side Story in about 4 months so any ideas for a song (also 16 bars) for that would also be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.

are you auditioning for a specific part.

I would suggest the Sergeant!

I am playing that part right now and it is SO fun!

Except for the fact that he is 17 and a tenor. And he's auditioning for a community theatre show, where, I would assume, plenty of older men will audition that are more suitable to the character roles. And the Sergeant is a bass.

Therefore the only principal role even remotely appropriate for him is Frederick. Although even being in the men's chorus in "Pirates" is loads of fun, and he shouldn't turn it down if offered.

I second the suggestion of "A Wandering Minstrel". Although pretty much any G&S tenor aria will do. The roles are all pretty interchangeable.

yes. but he said he is a tenor two. frederic has to hit some pretty high notes. and the role of the sergeant doesn't have to be a bass.

I am a low tenor/high baritone and it's really not bad.

I'm doing this play through community theatre and I got the part. And I'm only 16.

But whatever!

Good Luck!

and in community theater I think they'll cast whoever can vocally manage the role over who is the appropriate age/look!

I can't give any song suggestions though, lo siento. I know NOTHING about male rep. All I'll say for West Side Story is that I would actually audition with a ballad, cuz Tony has GOT to have great legato lines. Riff and the Jets, not so much, but why not aim high and audition for Tony.

Strong Balad for Tony.

A bit of earth from Secret Garden. Beautiful Ballad.

Would something from Mozart's Magic Flute do? There seems to be some similarities between the role of Papageno and the Major-General. But what about something from operetta, to tie in with the operetta-like nature of G&S.

A G&S song I'd recommend for a Frederic audition is "Take a Sparkling Pair of Eyes" from (I think) The Gondoliers. It's pretty much describing the perfect woman, which is what Freddy is in desperate need of!
