Pipe Dream.

So. I have a pipe dream that we'll see a full blown revival of Sweeney in the next 10 years with Bernadette Peters as Mrs Lovett.

Crazy, I know, especially as she is already 60!

*yeah, stupid idea*

At least she's still hot!

totally. Applause

If not on Broadway, I could see her doing it at another major theatre outside of New York...perhaps in Boston or Washington...maybe even LA.

Meh. I think the lame quality of the revival is more the director's fault and less the responsibility of the talent.
Salome

except the fact that LuPone should never touch that show. she is usually an over the top. marblemouthed diva. she's only done 3 roles well..Evita,Mama Ross and Reno Sweeney.

I liked Lupone but than again that was the first recording I heard. I don't know what i'd think about peters playing it. hmm

Patti LuPone played Fantine?
That role doesn't seem Patti LuPone-ish.

Original London Cast.
It warn't pretty, physically or vocally.

^For real, that's sort of like Ethel Merman playing Fantine.

Bernadette Peters has a perfect Fantine-ey voice, IMO.

Monsieur D'Arque

But who'd be Bernadette's Sweeney?

I still want to see David Bowie and Tim Curry get their chance at Sweeney. But if they follow the film's tactic and use a younger, edgier tenor Sweeney, how about Neil Patrick Harris? Completely against type, but did you see the end of Dr. Horrible? And the parts are written in about the same vocal range.
Sweeney Hyde

I don't care how old he is I want John Cullum to have a go at the role he tragically turned down back in 1978.

If not Cullum with Peters, then I really want to see Philip Quast, Terrance Mann, and Mandy Patinkin be Sweeney. I think all three would bring different things to the table. Quast would probably be the most tradition and the most operatic in sound. I think he would be a very tragic Sweeney. Mann would probably be different from anyone else...calm-angry (sorry-gratefull HA *snort*)...I dunno...it just fits to me. Patinkin I think would maybe be he creepiest Sweeney ever...especially if he used that weird falsetto of his at any point...can you imagine Pretty Women up and octave with his voice! GAH!

But I do want Bernadette to be Mrs. Lovett before anyone else gets a shot at it again.

From what little I've seen of it... YES.
He's my favourite Toby, BUT he could pull off Tenor!Sweeney INCREDIBLY well.

...
There is a need for me to actually WATCH that thing now. (Dr. Horrible.)

It would be really strange to see NPH as Sweeney but I'm open to anything as long as Bernadette is Lovett.

Is this literally a Pipe Dream though, or is it possible? Who has been the oldest Lovett on stage?
Monsieur D'Arque

And as far as Mandy Patinkin as Sweeney, that would be interesting- but, keep in mind, he also has the vocal range for Judge Turpin. And that would be the creepiest Judge Turpin ever.

Naturally, if he was the Judge and Harris was sweeney, "Pretty Women" could become a pretty, but unsettling, tenor duet.

Thinking about Pantinkin is akward for me because I just keep on seeing him as that dude from Criminal Minds...or in Yentl...

If Philip Quast were in it, I'd like him to do the judge again...

*OMG*. *Bump*

Probably common knowledge, but I stumbled upon this quote which gives me hope it may one day happen:

"In May, 2006, I went to a party which both Sondheim and Bernadette also attended. He told us that he was excited about the movie and that yes, Johnny could sing. At that time Mrs. Lovett had not be cast. Bernadette indicated her interest in the role, half-jokingly because of Johnny Depp - the look on her face was "oh, he's cute." Sondheim seemed interested in her doing it as well."

Please please please. Sweeney concert and/or revival in the next 10 years!
