Physical appearance for theatre questionThis is a weird question-- but I have long hair (goes down to the middle of my back) and I want to get it cut to shoulder length or a bit shorter but part of me worries that long hair might benefit me in casting. It doesn't really make sense, I know, but I worry about that stuff =P Does shorter hair put women at a disadvantage for say, Shakespeare or perhaps stereotypical heroine type roles where long hair would probably be ideal? I know they can wig you if they see it necessary but... I dunno.
just curious

i don't see why, because they can always put a wig on you. you should just get a hair cut that makes YOU look good, that expresses you and what you like.

^^ I concur.
Anything that screams "YOU" is best!

Yeah, I agree. As long as you don't cut it in the middle of a show without the director's permission, do what is you!
I remember I had to keep my hair long for two months during The Tempest. Worst part was those two months were July and August. They ended up putting a veil over my hair anyway, but hey, whatever. XD /random side story.

At the same time, you might not want to do anything too wild. It's good to be you, but if "you" is a flourescent blue mohawk, it may be difficult to visualise you as more traditional roles, wigged or not.

I personally keep my hair long. I really dislike wigs, so when possible I like to style my own hair.
I used to have really short hair, but once I got more involved in theatre long hair was the obvious option for me, personally.

Personally, anything that is still long enough to get in some sort of "up-do" is ideal, then you don't have to worry about wigs. I have also worn my share of wigs, and it's not that bad.
BUT I also agree- do whatever is most flattering for you- within reason- so that you look your best for auditions.
when I had really long hair I was so sick of it I never did anything with it, I'd just put it up in a ponytail or clip, and that wasn't very flattering. but when I got it cut to shoulder/collarbone length, I had to fix it down every day, and so I looked more "polished".

My main problem with wigs is that my head is large, and standard wigs look really unnatural on me. I have to order wigs with a bigger cap.

Hahahaha, when I was in Chicago, I was Katalin Hunyak (the hungarian girl) and they wanted me in a platinum blonde bob, and I had long brown hair down to the middle of my back. The costume people had already gotton me a wig (i would've let them cut it, of course, if they wanted) so they did pin-curls all over my head.
One interesting thing my high school does that most don't is they'll cut students hair for shows. Everyone's so into theatre that they'll never say no. It's great.
