Phantom VirginOkay, so I'm constantly listening to cast recordings of POTO, but I've never even seen the show or the new movie adaption! My knowledge of the show is limited, but I've got tickets to see the tour next month for the first time! I'm really anxious to see the Masquerade scene. Anything I need to know about the show? Particular things to pay extra attention to?

Refund your ticket.
Nah, just kidding. Everything you need to know, you'll be told in the show. Songs to look out for... Masquerade is alright. Otherwise, I'm the wrong person to answer this since I'm not particularly fond of Phantom.

the title song, angel of music.... the list goes on!

The least in depth info you know about a show before seeing it, the better.

Well I wouldn't want to know what happens. Would you? If I explained all the effects that happen in Phantom it wouldn't be a surprise and magical anymore.

I guess that really varies from person to person. By the time I saw the show for the first time in 2005, I'd worn out many copies of the original cast recording, read the "The Complete Phantom of the Opera" and gazed at every photo a million times since buying it in 1988, seen the movie a few time...and it still ended up being a great experience...and one I repeated many more times.

Especially since it's spectacle is exactly what makes POTO enjoyable.

Well of course it's a personal opinion.

Yes! Exactly! Spectacle!

I got the movie soundtrack for Christmas and now I have to face it for real that Emmy and Gerard really cannot sing. I mean, if you watch the movie at least you're distracted a little bit by the pretty scenery. But on a CD all you have is sound.

Sorry, I look crazy right now, "e-shouting" about spectacle. The concept of spectacle has just been on my mind lately, so I'm ever as anxious to see a good example.

Wicked is a spectacle.
That's pretty spectacular if you ask me. But not in a good way.

I saw Phantom for the first time this year, and I thought I'd be pretty cool and not that affected...whatever. I burst into tears at the end of the first act during "All I Ask of You."
It may be spectacle, but it is, in many ways (especially since you are seeing the tour, and can imagine how they travel with all that STUFF), awe inspiring.

it's definately awe-inspiring, at the end of the show I was near tears and I screamed myself hoarse when the Phantom came out for his bow.
A Word of Wisdom: No matter where you are seated ALWAYS bring binoculars! This has been proven very affective for me when seeing Broadway shows. Have fun!

Ah, the first time....my advice is don't look up infomation about the show or the spectacles. It's more fun that way. Unless you are pyrophobic.

Ragtime and Mary Poppins both have a lot of spectacle, and I think they both utilized the spectacle in a good way.

phantom is great the first time you see it. It was the first show i fell in love with and it still has a special place in my heart, and i think it's quite enjoyable. Just the beginning of the overture even still gives me chills. It may be spectacle but it certainly holds your attention. So have fun I think you'll enjoy it quite a bit.
And I often actually prefer listening to cds of shows i see them. I usually enjoy it more if i know the songs, maybe i'm just weird.
Where are you seeing it?

Regional rights are out for Phantom?
Wow. I'm actually very curious to see how that turns out. Be sure to update with a review and if possible, pictures.

Just see it. Don't worry too much about the show beforehand. In fact, don't even research or learn too much about it. Just go with an uncluttered brain - it's much more enjoyable that way.

I rarely like the tour cast of any show, so I feel compelled to do my research on who is starring on tour.

Spectacle isn't necessarily bad. I don't see why everyone is being all defensive.

I saw what I *think* is the current tour cast back in October. I thought the Phantom and Raoul were wonderful--Christine was adequate, she filled the role well, but didn't awe me the way the guys did. I saw Meg's understudy, who was shrill and irritating, but hopefully you won't have that issue.
