Phantom's relation to real operaI'm posting this threat because I've felt a little irritated that people think that POTO is a real opera. Yes, I know there are things that make it appear to be an opera, like the big, grand sets, the elaborate costumes, the faux-operatic way of singing, and the setting in the Paris Opera House. And yes I'm aware that the thorough-composed score makes it appear to be an opera.
However, POTO was never meant to be an opera. I can see that all these trappings of grand opera were meant to be something of a farcical subversion of real and authentic opera. Also, the music is written in more of a popular style. For even though there are hit tunes, they don't quite resemble the hit tunes of real opera.
I'm sorry if these thoughts are half-baked, but I'd be glad if you could help me articulate my arguments.

People that think that Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's The Phantom of the Opera is an opera need to go find a dictionary.

People who think that Tim Rice wrote the lyrics to Phantom need to get their facts straight.

That's alright, it's an honest mistake...Tim and Andrew did wright alot together...but it is a little silly to consider POTO an Opera...but I'm not going to say anything nasty about those people because I've been the recieving end of such comments as a Wicked fan (people make fun of us because they think we're stupid little fangirls) so I know what it feels like...

The most annoying thing is when people have seen the show and have studied music theory so they know whay opera is, and make the excuse 'I thought it was an opera because it has opera in the title'

I was just watching "Bathroom Divas" which is basically like American Idol for Canadian opera singers and one poor girl auditioned with Think of Me, and I just sat there thinking "Wow, she just killed any chances she had of the judges taking her seriously" I think they still liked her failry well, though. I dunno, I just thought that was kinda funny.

I was about fourteen when I discovered POTO...the original cast recording had just been released. And I never once mistook it for "real" opera. I knew it was meant to be operatic, but I didn't think it was genuine.
And, on the plus side, it did revive an interest in real opera for me. I had watched a lot of operas on PBS when I was very little (I know, an odd child), but once I got interested in POTO and then read the novel, I was interested in finding out more about real operas mentioned...such as "Faust."
