Phantom of the Opera rights

Quick question---Are the stage rights to Phantom of the Opera out for amateur and/or professional theatres, even slightly? The only reason I ask is because some guy was trying to hit on a friend of mine that I happen to like, and was being all cocky and saying his high school had a deal to "Phantom of the opera", i'm just trying to tell if he's an f***ing liar or not.

He's a liar. Very Happy

Not necessarily. I think the rights were just released to a few select highschools as an experiment to see if it'd work on a highschool level. Other than that however, the rights aren't available outside of those specific schools, so if your guy isn't performing it with one of the chosen highschools, then he's bullshitting your friend.

Yeah, they've realised them to four high schools and two colleges, just to see what changes have to be made and if it works at all. Some have already happened but a few more are still set to preform this year. My high school is one of them, and we're in march. So basically it is rare that this guy is telling the truth unless he goes to one of these four high schools in the intire country, but it is possible.

:edit: sorry, i didn't read all of that last post, i know i just basically repeated it.

I'm just surprised that the show is 20 years old now and still doesn't have amateur rights out yet.

He could be talking about rights to Phantom, a musical that came out about the same time as the ALW version. This one waw written by Yeston & Kopit. It is another version of the Phantom of the Opera story. this version has been in the licensable for quite some time. The rights are held by Samuel French as of the last time I checked.

The show has been running for 20 years straight both West End and on Broadway, so the situation is a bit different than for those musicals who's constantly revived. As long as the original productions are still running, they'll (rightfully) be a bit stricter on the rights.
