Parts

Hey guys, my school is doing this next semester, and I was just wondering what the parts were/ranges. Any help is appreciated.
Kragey

To the best of my knowledge, here are the more "principal" roles. The heights are taken from a local theater's casting call, so don't put TOO much in to them.

Males
Old Deuteronomy -- bass/baritone. Very boring.
Munkustrap -- baritone. Sings a LOT.
Rum Tum Tugger -- baritone. Wails and hits falsetto.
Gus/Growltiger -- baritone. Theatric vocals.
Mistoffelees -- tenor. Doesn't sing much. No taller than 5'7".
Mungojerrie -- baritone/tenor. Acrobat.
Skimbleshanks -- baritone/tenor. Scottish brogue.
Macavity -- baritone. Often doubles as a chorus cat.

Females
Grizabella -- mezzo. Must be a strong belter.
Rumpleteazer -- mezzo. Acrobat. No taller than 5'4".
Jemima -- soprano. Innocent and young. No taller than 5'4".
Jellylorum/Griddlebone -- soprano. Sometimes operatic.
Bombalurina -- alto/mezzo. Sexy. At least 5'6".
Demeter -- mezzo. Kind of sexy, but also rather skittish. At least 5'6".
Jennyanydots -- mezzo/soprano. Can "begin with a C."
Cassandra -- alto. Doesn't sing much. 5'7" or taller.

A note: most Tuggers and Munkus I've seen "counterbalance" in that, if one has a slightly higher voice, the other will have a slightly lower voice. Either way, if you feel I'm totally off base, please tell me your own opinions. These are just the voices I've often heard mixed with heights from a casting call site.

????? Cassandra and Jemima are principal roles? Sine when? Last time I(an insane CATS fan) checked, Cassandra was a swing and Jemima has only a few singing solos. Confused

In some productions Cassandra has had a starring role (including singing Macavity with Bomba in Mexico, I believe)...however traditionally she only has the two solo lines. Because of the solo lines, it is appropriate to give her a part (although I have heard her both alto and soprano...I swear in the OAC all the females were sops...) And Jemima/Sillabub are frequently considered principal because of the solo she sings...

Honestly I don't look at any of them as 'swings', though...so I'll hush now...the only swings I think of are those in London that truly are listed as such, or those at Bway that stayed backstage and sang unless they were needed to fill...

IMO, Jemima might have not so many lines, but she dances a lot and has a "key role" in the plotline: being the one who sings "Memory" together with Grizabella, she is the one who gives her streght and leades the way to Victoria and the others towards the final acceptation of the old queen.

In the London production (the one I know best), Cassandra tends to stay amongst the others, not singing very much, but being silent and discrete as real queens do... Cool Wink

Also, CATS is as much a dance show as it is for vocal performances, and the dance area Cassandra is almost always one of the strongest female dancers on cast, often seen leading in formation. In my mind she is a principle character; likewise, Victoria has few if any solo lines in most productions, but she is a very prominent dancer and there seems no doubt in general opinion that she is a principle character, so why not Cassandra?

That's exactly why I put Cassandra and Jemima up: they have solo lines and are fairly prominent in terms of dancing. I didn't put Victoria up because she's never had a solo line in any production I've seen, so I don't quite know what her vocal range should be. (I'm going to hazard a guess at mezzo, since that tends to be the norm.)

She has solo lines in the US Tour in the "Jellicle Songs" part. I don't recall if she did on Broadway or not, though. She also duet's with Jemima in the "Invitation to the Jellicle Ball."

I saw a US Tour, a local production, the video, a German production, a Finnish production, and several others through video. I've never seen her get a solo line, although the "duet with Jemima" is pretty common. Again, though, I think the original poster was asking for vocal parts, so I didn't add her because I don't quite think her vocal range matters.
