PAINFULLY BORING

i saw this show last year on the UK tour. it was the worst thing i've ever seen on stage, and thats saying something. i dont know what its like in america, but this show was just awful in the UK. the story was thin and the songs were slow and dull. murder and facard were the only good songs. this was a prior to west end tour, funnily enough, it never made it to the west end.

i just thought it was a poor excuse for a musical. i was really looking forward to it because we were going as a school trip and i wanted to show everyone that they were wrong about musicals all being happy clappy dancing fag fests. i was real dissapointed that i had to asure them the whole journey home that not all musicals are like that.

Did you actually tell them "Musicals aren't always

?" Because that probably won them over right then and there.
Kragey

I don't recall Jekyll & Hyde being happy or clappy.
rockyrocks666

yeh i know, but it was still boring as hell
rockyrocks666

the comment bout being happy clappy didnt work but you know how people thinkof musicals. you're right, jekyll and hyde does dismiss this but at the same time, it wasnt what i wanted my friends to think all musicals are like.

sorry to chirp in but i have to say I am such a fan of Wildhorns work and J&H is one of my fave shows, and having seen it on Broadway and Germany and spending half my waking life trying to get other people to listen to it and see beyond 'this is the moment' I was so excited to learn that it was over here on tour at last, and the version with Bring on the Men/Bitch Bitch Bitch and I need to Know in it so off I went to the box office to get my fistful of tickets.....

I was mortified. This was one of the worst shows I have ever seen, I cried for all the wrong reasons. I was cringing in my seat, then it gets worse, my mates turn to me and think Ive gone senile as they presume that the version they are watching is the show I love and have raved on about for the last 7 years. How wrong can you get? I was cringing for a week. I still get nightmares now..... Sad
rockyrocks666

this is exactly how i felt, but not protective towards the show, just musicals in general. i am happy to accept that it CAN be a good show, but im glad that you agree that it was SHOCKING in the U.K.
abbeycat

Wow..... Funny but Jekyl & Hyde is one of my favorite shows. Musically speaking its very beautiful. IN his eyes, take me as I am, someone like you, and this is the moment are wonderful songs. I think this musical is more for the mature Musical fan. What I mean by that is somone who has seen alot of shows. Its not a great musical for somones first show. Its definently an aquired taste. I like to compare the musical to the movie "Mystic River". When it came out I either heard somone say "it was amazing" or say "it was really boring." To love this show you need to love the music otherwise there is no point. But thats my two cents. Im not going to try change poeples opinion about this one because this one is in the eyes and the ears of the beholder, but as for me I think it is a great show.

Don't get me wrong, I love the music to this show, it is dark, beautiful and amazing! However I saw the show on its UK tour and it was awful, dull and boring. I couldn't believe that the cd I had been listening to for the past two years was the same show. I have to say it is the worst show I have ever seen and I have seen a lot of shows. It could have just been the acting on this particular tour - who knows? All I know is that the UK tour was meant to follow on into the West End and it didn't make - doesn't that say it all?
Webster

Gothic music, then pop tunes. This is all J&K is. I'm not saying he writes bad music, he just writes the same four songs over and over again. IT gets boring. VERY boring. And from an actual theory point of view, it's nowhere near GREAT music. It's fun to listen to, but technically speaking, it's really simple.

I have never seen the show. But I do have the soundtrack, and it definitely has some of my favorite modern Musical songs on there-- "This is the Moment", "The Confortation", "Lost in the Darkness", "Take me as I am" they are full of great songs. But I can see, how one could thing it is really drab. The musical itself, is really dark. There are no happy, upbeat moments throughout the whole score. Except for the lighter pop tunes like "Take me as I am" could lighten the score a tad, but other than that. It is what it is, dark and morningful. Nothing bad, with it. But for a person who is use to seeing "Cats" it is hard to get use to. It's score I think could be compared alot to "Sweeny Todd"-- very dark.

I do want to see this show, though. I just dont know where I could.

I DO HEAR rumor that they are remaking it, into more of like a rock opera. That's all rumors, though. I think that would be awesome.

Hasn't it been worked over enough already? Sad

Personally, I quite like the show, but I have heard it is often looked down on in professional circles, for the composer, the simplicity of the music, and the lyrics.
Salome

One of the worst shows Ive ever seen as well. the score is not only godawful, unmemorable and overblown..but its doesnt fit the era at all.

the lyrics by the usually good Leslie Bricusse are inane and amatuerish..its sahocking to think this is the man who wrote the lyrivs to Stop the World,Dr. Doolittle and Scrooge.

thep lot is nothing more than a Jack The Ripper take off..it bares little resemblance ot either the novella or the 2 film versions.

Its just dreck.

Scarlet pimpernel is the only show i like in which Wildhorn was involved. and even in Scarlet Pimpenel there are song bad songs (prayer, when I look and you, and You are my Home).
MsDivaKate

I enjoy some of the music, but find the show itself a bit sinfully boring.
Lazarus (Adam G)

I actually liked the Confrontation, though...
