Pacific Overtures

I recently bought the original and revival recordings of Pacific Overtures and I love both of them. Im a huge fan of Sondheim and shocked that it took so long for me to find this show. Both of the recordings are good but I like the the original more because the orchestrations are much better on it. I wish they released the taping of it on dvd. I was wondering what do you guys think of it?

I love the music, and much prefer the original cast recording too. The show itself can drag for me at times but I bet the low quality recording of the taping contributes to this so I also hope it is released on DVD!

Apparently it was going to be released for Sondheim's birthday (75th?) but it never happened.

I admit, I have a much higher appreciation on Pacific Overtures after I had to do a geography essay comparing it to traditional kabuki theatre. Such a great score. The low quality of the recording itself, though, can turn it into a slight bore.

God I love this score, so under appreciated. The show I was teching for this quarter had a line in it about pacific overtures and no one in the cast had ever even heard of it.

I think the songs are some of sondheim's most beautiful
