Overdone Audition Songs

So what are the overdone audition pieces these days? The ones that you totally risk another person singing at the same audition. Ones that the directors are oh-so-tired of hearing??
vanillabean

Anything from Les Mis, Rent, or Wicked. Everyone does those these days...
AllyDiva87

"Tomorrow" -Annie
"Wouldn't it be Loverly"-My Fair Lady
"In my Own Little Corner"-Cinderella
"On the Street Where you Live"-My Fair Lady
"On my Own" Les Miserable
"Stars and the Moon"-Songs from a New World
"Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend"-Gentleman Perfer Blondes (Though it's been in Moulin Rouge hence it's popularity at the moment)
"Popular" -Wicked
"Gimme Gimme"-Throughly Modern Millie
Are a few of them.. There are more.. but mainly those i've heard alot..
kaileykoo

also shy from once upon a matress
and wicked and rent
CYTthespian

hmm, i don't think shy is very popular. when i auditioned with it, the piano player said, 'wow, i've never heard this before...what tempo should i play?'

anyway, i think anything from Follies or 42nd street is highly overdone.
katieanne

ditto on the rent and wicked. i found that "all that jazz," "maybe this time," "corner of the sky," "on my own" (obviously) are all done way too much.

Really? Wow, I sang "The Wizard and I" once and nobody had heard of the song or the show!! Stuff must be different over here.

Totally agree with Les Mis though = way overdone!! I auditioned for Les Mis a few weeks ago and hated the fact that we had to sing songs from the show, so I had to sing "On My Own". I just felt that they were cringing (I probably would have been), like every note was something they had heard a thousand times.

If I hear another little girl sing "Tomorrow" from Annie or "Reflection" from Mulan, or "When She Loved Me" from Toy Story 2 I will SCREAM!!!!
Baker

"Over the Rainbow" - The Wizard of Oz
"My Favorite Things" - The Sound of Music
muckseen

...Anything by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Most especially "Memory" and "Another Suitcase in Another Hall".

Les Mis also done to death.

hm, i've never even heard of either of those.
Mr_X

Really, you haven't even heard of "Memory", probably the only memorable song from Cats?

In terms of auditioning for kid's shows, there are so many.
"Not For the Life of Me" from I believe Thoroughly Modern Millie
"Popular" from Wicked
"The Wizard and I" from Wicked
"Defying Gravity" from Wicked (which is a disaster)
"Shy" from OUAM
"My New Philosophy" from YAGMCB
Those last two are true especially when there's a belty childish girl part.
pinkstiletto510

"Think of Me" for sopranos who think they have a high C (or B depending on what sheet music you have)...........please, if you dont have a solid and full high note then dont sing the piece

Because so many people can't sing it! And worse, they think they can. It's a hard song!!
CYTthespian

ah, i see.

yeah, i knew someone who did defying gravity in a talent show, and she didn't belt a single note. it was all just sang real pretty. annoying as hell.
BroadwayBabyEddy1

Does anyone have any suggestions of songs a person could audition w/ for children's theater which would blow people away?
