Overcoming extremem nervousnous?

I'd like to know how. I went to audition for a show today and when I started singing my teeth tingled as if I had a cavity in each of them. Bad cavities, that is. The director, who I have sung to before both for auditions and for judging, told me to restart and that she had never seen me so nervous before.

So, any tips on getting rid of sudden nervous streaks like that. I was fine until I opened my mouth to start singing.

Wow. Sorry to hear about the not-so-great experience. <3

I don't know if this will help, but I have learned over the years that the more prepared I am, the more confident I am. Preperation will not only help you perform at your best, but will put you at ease beause you will know what you are doing and what you have to bring to the table. I practice everything, from my walk in to my intro to my actual material. Sometimes even the "thank you," ha.

If you have prepared, just know that you are going to do the best you can. Go into the space, take in your surroundings, and just relax. You're going to be great!

DON't focus on the "competition." It will only make you more nervous, cause you to doubt yourself, and will take away from your personal prepartion time. Just focus on YOU. Do whatever you have to do, and don't be afraid to tell people you need some space.

I read this in a book once (sorry, don't remember which one!); try to find something familiar in the audition space that will remind you of your living room, bedroom, or another place that makes you feel at ease. I've never done it, but hey, to each their own.

Also, if it's the thought of the director/producer/whoever watching you, just keep in mind, they want you to do well. They are hoping desperatly that you will walk in and be so perfect for the part that they can cast it and just go home. Ha. Really though. Just remember that they're on your side, so to speak.

I hope I helped a little. Break a leg at your next audition!

Thanks. I did prepare, but I didn't prepare all of that, just the song.

What made me more nervous was that I had never auditioned in front of other ADULTS who were auditioning. I knew the director, too, and it's scary to audition for her because she notices EVERYTHING and doesn't believe in perfection.

So yeah, next time I audition, I'm going to make sure that I am completely compared.

Thanks. Smile
Hanniel!

You're welcome, glad I could help. Very Happy
And, yeah, I hadn't ever done an open audition until the first time I auditioned for a community show. It can definitely be nerve-wracking.

Above all, just remember why you're there, and why you do what you do.
That always makes me feel better. Ha.

Hope your next audition is a good experience!

Yeah, me too. Razz It'll be in a few weeks, but it won't be for a show, but more for a group.

Since I didn't make that show, though, I'm going to work tech on it.

Oh well. Razz If I can't deal with rejection (especially for my first open audition show), then I don't need to be in Theater in the first place. ^^
music is my life!!!

make sure you keep breathing steadily!

The director wants to get a good actor for the role so s/he wants you to do well!

keep your chin up, and think positively!
