Outstanding shows of the decade

Does anyone else feel there is a signifigant lack of outstanding shows this decade. Ignoring revivals what have we had this decade that will be considereds truely good?

only a handful...

Avenue Q
Dirty Rotten Scoundels
Grey GardensThe Producers
Spring Awakening
Spelling Bee

why the lack of good work compared to other decades.

where are todays Sondheim's Lerners, and Kander and Ebbs.
Sweeney Hyde

Well the decade is not nearly out yet. We still have to see how Curtains, The Pirate Queen, and LoveMusik will do. I think all of them have great potential.

You forgot The Full Monty and Spamalot.
Salome

I'd say Spamalot..but Full Monty isnt even close ot the quality of his weork on DRS.
Sweeney Hyde

I know you hate Wicked with a burning passion, however, we all know it will be remembered alongside the others. Personally I love it.
Salome

I'm talking good show. Wicked is not considered a good show.

I am refering ot quality work in this thread... Wicked is the type of show that is crowding this decade..not making it better.
Sweeney Hyde

Many, many people disagree. I know all of your feelings about the show. However it is entertaining. Defying Gravity is the act I closer of the decade. I guess what I need to know is what criteria do you have for a "good show".
flyinghome

Light in the Piazza
Drowsy Chaperone (certainly better than Spamalot)
Last Five Years
Bat Boy

I think all of the above more than qualify

Piazza..YAWN

and Last 5 years wasnt that written in the 90s? right after Parade?
jazzygirlsings

Me too, but she will disagree, as she doesn't like Piazza...crazy woman...LOL!
Sweeney Hyde

So the list, including everything that has been said, is now:

Anenue Q
The Drowsy Chaperone
The Producers
The Full Monty
Grey Gardens
Spring Awakening
The Light in the Piazza
Bat Boy
Wicked
Dirty Rotten Scoundrals
25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
Spamalot
The Last Five Years

anything else?
Salome

I felt Piazza was well written form a technical sense, but unexciting.

Good Performances..esp. Vicki Clarke and Chris Sarandon..but god I wouldnt see it a 2nd time.
jazzygirlsings

^That's you...I thought it was brilliant...

Anyways...L5Y came out in 2002...so yes...it can be included on the list...unless you're only including Broadway musicals...
vanillabean

The Producers
Avenue Q
Wicked

Those are my top 3. And I mean no disrespect Salome but I agree that Wicked is going to be remembered for a long time.
Salome

Wicked will be remembered but not as a good strong classic show like SOuth Pacific,My Fair Lady,Company,Sweeney Todd...see thats whatt I am talking about here. This thread is specifically to show that shows like Wicked or J&H are being produced today not works like Company or Parade.

Jazzy..help me here i dont think i am making myself clear enough.
Matthew

Unfortunately, of course.
Sweeney Hyde

I think Wicked WILL be considered a classic. That doesn't mean you have to like it. There are classic shows you don't like I'm sure.
Matthew

But the classics are written well
Sweeney Hyde

A lot of people, myself included, think that it is well written.

it wont be considered a classic it will be considered pop culture shlock same as cats,Starlight, mama mia or phantom.
vanillabean

That I agree with.
But it will be remembered Wink
katethegreat

Its written in a way that alot of people like - and quite a lot of us here like. Sorry, I know you don't like it, but its a popular musical, it will be around for a while. Especially as its still to reach some countries that want it.
Salome

Popular doesnt mean good.

Jackass the movie is popular..but its crap. see?

Heavy Metal music was popular but its crap. ..see?

Of course there is a whole other thread about that.

Damn you Salome, I laughed out loud in class when I read that!
Salome

LMAO! I always loved that quote..I can't taske credit for it..it was Dorothy Parker!
flyinghome

Hairspray
Caroline or Change
Dessa Rose
Amour
Jane Eyre.

Some off'bways again, but all contenders in my opin.
Salome

Jane Eyre? One of my favorite novels..the musical did not do it jusice at all.
SuperKabob

To go back a page (or two)... Light In The Piazza was great singing, great set and costumes, good acting, and boooooring plot. The only thing that really kept me entertained was reading the subtitles that were used that day and trying (but failing) to translate the italian really fast.

"It is nonsense to say what a musical should or should not be. It should be anything it wants to be, and if you don't like it you don't have to go to it. There is only one absolutely indispensable element that a musical must have. It must have music." -Oscar Hammerstein II

I thought you had taste, Salome. Avenue Q and Piazza would top my list.
Salome

I Do . Jane Eyre is one of the great novels of world literature. The Bronte family's talent was amazing. all 4 siblings were great writers..how does one family manage tat. and to have Jane Eyre and Wuthring Heights..two of the greatest gotic novel ever written come from the same family...its almost impossible but it happened.
OneSongGlory

Dessa Rose.. gah <3 Amazing musical. I still don't understand how it only lasted.. what, a couple months? Disappointing.
Matthew

Wicked.
Eponine93

Why does everything on this board turn into a Wicked: Is it Great or Garbage? debate. Can't we all realize that some people on the board love Wicked, others don't, and just leave it alone. We all pretty much know each other's opinions on Wicked. And no matter what you guys (and you know who I'm talking about) say, the chances of you making me or anyone on the board who likes Wicked hate it is about the chances of me reforming you to Wicked fans. As in, this debate will not change anyone's opinion. So why bother?

I'm sorry if I'm a b**** about this. I'm just tired of the Wicked debate.

I was kidding. A lot of my friends and I were bored when we studied it in English last year, but it had appeal to all the hopeless romantics in our class.
SuperKabob

Jane Eyre = Awesome (the book, at least)

I have probably seen every movie version of it, having first read it in fifth grade, (with a dictionary by my side) I dont really think any musical could fully grasp the entire story, though.

because most Wicked fans treat it as a great work. I have no problem with people liking Wicked. but please..admit its a guilty pleasure and stop trying to make it sound like Sweeney Todd,My Fair Lady or Parade.

I have some guilty pleasure musicals too. I love listneing to Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and the songs I own from Carrie, but they arent good musicals.
Matthew
