Operation WICKEDAlright.
This message goes out to all of those Wicked-haters. 75% of you say things like "the music sucks" "the characters are dumb" and things like that. "Stephen Schwartz is stupid. He doesn't know how to write music."
Is that so?
Your turn. Now you write a song that could be used in a WICKED musical. Record yourself singing it, and post it here in a new topic with a poll for whether it's better than WICKED or not. If more than 50% vote that it's better than WICKED over a one-week period, you win. You can bash WICKED all you want. If you lose, you find real reasons to not like WICKED, with support from the musical. Then we will see whether WICKED is really good or not.
Please post here if you are going to write a song.
As for the voters, be harsh. Would you rather here this song on Broadway, or Defying Gravity? That's the real question.
Ladies and gentlemen, Operation WICKED starts now.

LOL! Love it!
Go on then - we wait with baited breath!

This is silly and frivolous.
I hate it when people say..."could you write a better score?!"
No.
I haven't been trained in music composition.
When we say his score is bad, it's compared to better works such as Pippin and Rags and Butterflies are Free.

But that's exactly it. "He's so bad at that."
You give it a try. See if there is maybe some sort of challenge to writing an entire score for a Broadway musical.

I never said he was bad. If I did, I didn't mean it like that.
I meant this score is bad compared to the others.

I didn't enjoy any of the scores you mentioned - but I'm not bashing them like you do with Wicked. If its ok for you to praise them, is it ok for me to like wicked without being told how awful it is every 10 minutes?

I didn't say the scores were great.
I said.
Wicked is a poorer score in comparison to his other works.
Pippin is definitely his best score however.

Oh please.
If I say my dentist sucks, he's not going to turn around and ask ME to perform a root canal.

I think Pippin is terrible! But the point is, I'm not constantly bashing it!

This is defeating the point of the post.

Pippin has only three songs that I like: Magic To Do, Corner of the Sky and No Time At All. I actually think Children of Eden has a better score overall, as far as Schwartz musicals go.

still beyond the point.

Yes but people were talking about how awful Wicked was in a thread entitled "Why all the hate?" so it wasn't like he was trolling about the boards and 'attacking' your views out of nowhere.

Why, if you hate wicked, do you even go on this WICKED board and bash it. As parents everywhere say, if you don't have something nice to say, DON'T SAY ANYTHING!!!!!!!! It really annoys me how these people think they're these great critics for hating a musical and telling everyone who likes it about how awful it is. It's just snobby.

I really hate that sentiment. If everyone stuck to it, there would never be any honest, frank talk.
Being nice and being appropriate are two different things.

now that i think of that, you're right, but there is also a difference between giving friendly advice and being mean about it

Oh my.
They always say:
Why do you have a problem with us liking Wicked?!!!!11!
My question:
Why do have a problem with us NOT liking it?

the difference is huge.
I'm not being mean.
I'm just stating facts.[/quote]

I'm personally convinced that there are two or three songs missing from a closer-to-perfect Wicked. These songs would further the plot and character development considerably. Here are examples of what they could, theoretically, be like.
1. Something's Changing (Here At Shiz): To take place immediately before the train station sequence. The song would open with Fiyero wondering why he's found himself thinking instead of just living wildly, and why he suddenly seems to care about people other than himself? Something's changing, he realizes. Boq cuts in on him to comment that he too can sense a change. Nessa has changed from a timid girl into a domineering, commanding little queen on wheels. Even Shen Shen and Pfanee can sense a change- Galinda's hanging out with the green girl. Something is changing at Shiz, and it's all because of Elphaba.
2. A Change In The Weather: Morrible and the Wizard need a song together. Morrible is sadly under-represented in the show.

D'Arque, those are brilliant suggestions. The first song especially would give us some more insight on characters that are otherwise left somewhat flat - Fiyero, Boq, Shenshen, and Pfannee.

This is a good idea, but I think we should really get some of the song writers here to try it out. I can write lyrics if I am really inspired, but for the life of me I can't make up melodies and I definitely cannot sing. Maybe we should have a MdN songwriting competition having nothing to do with Wicked. That should be interesting.

I will write lyrics for those songs, and contribute what i can to the melodies- they can be part of my Wicked revision, if they turn out well enough.
