Once On This Island Male RolesDoes anyone know the vocal ranges of the male parts in Once on this Island?
I'm more interested in Agwe and Papa Ge's ranges.

I was in the show (as Papa Ge). It rocks. It was a while ago so I'm not sure I remember exactly. I do know there are Gs to be hit for Papa Ge, and maaaybe an A flat, I would be surprised if there were more than one. You should definitely have a good high G. Also you should be able to do a sweet evil laugh. It's kinda necessary (they had us do such things at call backs). Our agwe hit a high A flat but I'm pretty sure it's optional in the score. It was, I think, near the end of rain, possibly the very end...the agwe on the OBCR improvises a long run upward instead of either choice, our agwe just held out a beastly long A flat, it was impressive.
As far as low ranges, nothing difficult that I remember. If you have a decent low range I think you'd be alright.

Ok, so I don't know much about Papa Ge's range. but everything LW said seems right (well obvi cause he played the role). I was Agwe last spring (even though I'm a girl, but there weren't enough boys and I'm a really strong soprano). I basically sang the role up an octave, but it's really a tenor/baritone role with some really high (but mostly optional) stuff. I remember that nothing really went outside the range of Rain (which is such a fun song), so from looking at my copy of Rain, it goes from the C# below middle C to an optional high G# (which is a D# if you don't do the G.)
Good luck auditioning! OOTI is probably the most fun show I've ever been in, and all the roles are so interesting (and it's such an ensemble show; we had a cast of 15, and there were 11 featured roles). Have fun!
