Micaela?

Once on This Island costumes?Hello! I'm currently the Technicel Director/ Costume Designer for my school's production of Once on this Island.
We finished our casting tonight, and we have cast a girl as the character of Papa Ge, the God of Death.
Does any one have any ideas of what I could do as a costume for her? My original idea was to use just dress pants and an open vest, but now that the role is being played by a girl, I can't do that.
Meanwhile, the Director would really like to costume to be androgonous (sp?).
Anyway, any ideas?
Thank you.

Is she busty? That changes a lot. I have a bust that fits my frame, so back when I did drag, I had to take extra precautions to flatten it out. And if you're careful, you can still have a partially-open vest/shirt-like thing: double-sided tape is a wonder.

in a jr. version I saw of it they actually put Papa Ge in a tuxedo (or a nice suit) because it gave his character a really sly effect. I think it's a matter of opinion though.

Why not just change the character to a female? She could be...Mama Ge! JK Just doesn't have the same ring does it?
For a serious suggestion, the character has, for an evil dude, quite a bit of flare, or at least that's how i picture him (maybe because in the production i was in he was played by a very gay man). So you could play on her femininity and put her in something Fosse-fied (all black, fairly well-fit, bowler hat if you're feeling brave ) to give the character a showy edge. It would even give her some characterization to play with in her performance of the part.

In the production I was in, Papa Ge was in all black - a shirt and pants. In a production a friend of mine was in, Papa Ge was in this crimson-red tuxedo, which gave him an interesting look. I suggest going with either one, even though your Papa Ge's a girl.
