Lazarus (Adam G)

Once and for all, who is the best JCS Performer?!

Who's yer favourite?

I couldn't fit them all on the poll, so just choose or add your own if the actor isn't on the list:

Ian Gillian
Jeff Fenholt
Paul Nicolas (72)
Trevor White
Ted Neely (Movie)
Martian Jay
75 Mexican Guy
Japanese Cast Guy
John Farnham
Paul Nicolas (92)
Ted Neely (Live)
Billy Porter
CC Productions Guy
Larry Friedman (Ted Neely's Understudy for the AD Tour)
Darryl Lovegrove
Dave Willets
David Chernhult
Steve Balsamo
BBC Cast Guy
Glenn Carter
Glenn Carter's Understudy
Kristian Vetter
Patrick Bopp (Oh God...)
Sasha Krebbs
Sebastain Bach (See above option)
Eric Kunze
2003 Remsheild Guy
Drew Sarich
Siglo Guy
Peru Cast Guy
Danny Zolli

My choice would be:
Ted Neely, movie and live, closely tied with Danny Zolli, Drew Sarich John Farnham, Darryl Lovegrove, Eric Kunze Jeff Fenholt, and behind them Sasha Krebbs, and Steve Balsamo

Yes, I can choose that many. You can't. Ha! *

*Yes you can
Lazarus (Adam G)

Also, if someone wanted to post up a 'Best Judas' topic, then we can settle that too.
Chavaleh

Ted Neeley, with Ian Gillian as a close second.
Brother Marvin Hinten, S.

Ted Neeley (movie and live), Danny Zolli, Jeff Fenholt, Ian Gillan, and Eric Kunze, in that order.
jcstar

Ian Gillan reaches highs that no other Jesus can get to.
Jeff Fenholt is the Jesus I was raised on, so he's my favourite of all time.
Ted Neeley is great. Enough said.
Eric Kunze is a mix of Neeley and Fenholt, so I love his Jesus.
Dany Zolli is the best of all these guys. Let us never forget that.

Andy.
FeralCats

Are we just talking Jesus'? If not, I'm surprised no one has mentioned the late, truly great Carl Anderson.
Lazarus (Adam G)

Just Jesus'. If I had to pick a Judas, Carl Anderson would be first, and behind him would be Lawerence Clayton, Jay Lag^aia, Dutch Appleton Theater Judas, Ben Vereen, and Jon English. Zublin Varla would be there somewhere.
Cazzy Mcsnazzy

Steve Balsamo rocks my world!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4vdIkYIQJA&search=jesus%20christ%20superstar

I have two videos of Krebs in JCS. Breathtaking production! They did it in an oiutdoor garden. Krebs is the German version (I think) of Kunze.

Kunze is awesome. Amazing control and can blow your head off with his screams... especially when you're not expecting it.

Andy.
Lazarus (Adam G)

Krebs is amazing.

I've never heard the full recording, but his Gethsemane is beautfiul.
jcstar

Let's make a thread at WTB that describes how great Krebs really is!

Andy.
Keroppi

My vote would be for Takeshi Kaga (that Japanese guy), followed closely by John Farnham and John English Wink

...

You're joking, right?
Tiny-Tot

I may not be a good judge of this cuz I only have seen Ted Neely perform Jesus, but I thought he was wonderful.
Webster

Ian Gillian definitely. He has the right voice for it. period.

As much as I love Ted Neeley, his cross eyes are so freaky!

Jeff Fenholt was very good, but he seemed more interested in sounding good than portraying the character.

But we must all reckognize that Glenn Carter is the definitive Jesus and Jerome Pradon is the best Judas. EVER.

*PSYCHE*
Brother Marvin Hinten, S.

If I hadn't noticed the *PSYCHE*, I'd have torn you a new one.

That's only because of trhe cast recording. When you're recording the songs in a studio, you're more concerned about getting the vocal lines right on a few takes. Save the acting for the stage.

Andy.
Lazarus (Adam G)

The *PSYCHE* saved your ass. Wink

Kidding, you're entitled to your opinion, but I still would've killed you. ^_^

As for Fenholt, I wish there was a bootleg out there. Andy, get him to record a new one!
jcstar

I will ask him, but I doubt he will say "yes." Anything is possible, though.

That reminds me.... I gotta start on those interviews I promised you kids.

Andy.
Lazarus (Adam G)

I can't wait to read them!
jcstar

I can't wait to start them!

I have a problem, though...
Barry has said "yes" to an interview, and you all know what he means to me as a performer. How do I do the interview without sounding like a fan? Or can that be avoided? I mean, Barry treats me as a equal or friend.

Then I'll be goiing after Fenholt for a no-holds-barred interview. He (and Barry) are the reasons why I started to sing in the first place.
The thing about Fenholt is: he's my favourite Jesus. I was raised on his Jesus. Yet, he spoke out against JCS in his Testimony. How do I stay objective?

Thoughts?
Andy.
Lord Moe

Steve Balsamo!!!!!!!!!
MELstolethestage®™

Not the biggest fan of Glenn Carter at all... In fact I'd say the guy playing Jesus (Jason Galu) in Hamilton, New Zealands production of JCS upstages him by far.

But I do enjoy Jérôme Pradon as Judas and Rik Mayall as Herod.
aNGie_BaBY

so it looks like im going to be in trouble...

I really enjoy Glenn Carter's Jesus, what a voice! John Farnham is great (cos he's Aussie Smile ) and such a star, i think his voice is better now he's older, and i'd like to hear him try again and really push his voice.

So..
I love Jerome Pradon as Judas. Everything about him, it made me love the show.

But...
Hate hate hate Renee Castle. Not quite sure why she was cast?!
Jesus

Carl Anderson outshine's all these performers.

I agree on your agreed.
jcstar

May I disagree? I mean, just to bother Laz.

You know I love ya, bro.

I forgot who and what role we were talking about, though...

Andy.
MooreDaltreyLove

Ted Neely by far, he is that role to me.
Jekkienumber24601

Eric Kunze as Jesus and Zubin Varla as Judas.
Lord Moe

Steve Balsamo, Ted Neeley, and Danny Zolli
dawnm

the late Steve Alder for me

You were 6 when this happened.

I seem to remember hearing about it, but didn't know he had any connection with JCS.

Andy.
dawnm

jcstar, he first played Peter and then went on to play Jesus in 1976/77 at The Palace Theatre. It's a shame most people only remember him from his role in TV's The Professionals and not his work in JCS, Grease and Hair.
I'm in the process of setting up a tribute website to him and have been lucky enough to have interviwed many of his co-stars from these shows, all who have been so helpful and kind. There will be a section for JCS on the site with photos and interviews with cast & crew members.
Patrick

Vocally, no one matches up to the original London duo of Ian Gillan and Murray Head

plus--Ian Gillan was in Deep Purple, so....there
aranelcarnilino

Yep, Ted's good. I'm gonna see him mid-December in Portland. *does happy dance*

Carl Anderson was so amazing as Judas! Vocally, the undefeated champion forever. (Pretty sure about that anyway.)

I know gazillions of people hate Glenn Carter, but I think he deserves more credit than he gets. I, personally, really enjoyed his performance. His voice range is very impressive. Having just watched three of his live Broadway performances (on DVD), I think he's really good - playing Jesus is a very difficult role.

Jerome Pradon is a great actor. I won't say anything positive about his singing or barrydennen12 will come on this site from youtube and kill me. Twisted Evil

I've heard Jeff Fenholt, Ian Gilliam, Glenn Carter, and Ted Neely with Gestheneme, and Fenholt was the only one I feel who nailed it.

You're the first person aside from JCStar who puts Fenholt on par with Gillan/Neeley. I don't think the Broadway 71' recording is given the respect it deserves. But then again, the album is so rushed and cut down, it's hard to enjoy it. It's like JCS on speed.

Truly, a poor recording of an amazing cast. But I don't feel anyone tops the due of Jeff Fenholt and Ben Vereen. Why, on why didn't they put "The Last Supper" on there?

And why did Fenholt have to pull a 180 and denounce the show?
Goldenvoice

I'd have to go with Steve Balsamo as Jesus! Mr. Green
Goldenvoice

I should also add that I love the two swedish Pilates; Fred Johanson and Morgan Toft. Toft played Pilate in the first english version to be performed in Sweden obviously..
