Oliver! for schools?Hey, I'm considering doing a production of Oliver for a school district to include only students as the performers. Do you think this is wise? Also, I need to know where I can find scripts an d the ability to buy the rights. Please get back to me ASAP on this we want to try and run the show near the end of summer. Thanks! |

It depends on whether or not you have the talent. Only you know whether you have the talent to pull it off. I have seen dreadful school productions of Oliver and wonderful ones. The show has huge age ranges (from young boys to old women) so do you have the cast? You will need a kick-ass actor to pull off Fagin at 16/17/18. |

I'm pretty sure that we could get the talent, the Director did Into The Woods using only children under the age of 14. it was a totally awesome performance. now my only real problem is I have no clue where to find scripts and rights for the play, I've looked at Samuel French, but they don't offer it. Does any one know where I can get it?
Thanks |

Seeing as I'm doing Oliver! right now...
You need A LOT of children. You need to able to work with them, keep them under control, and you need to be able to teach them not to look (as one of my friends said) "So f*cking deadpan" onstage. Kids are generally rowdy, but throw 'em onstage and they won't be loud enough or anything like that. If you cast a little kid as Oliver (just because I know some people cast an older person as him; ours is a 12 y/o girl), be sure that [s]he is responsible and will learn the material. Luckily, our Oliver's an angel and she's so talented...and SO ****ING CUTE!!! Your Dodger needs to be responsible as well, but needs to be able to provide a contrast to Oliver. Our Dodger's great at singing, but unfortunately, she's not very good at Cockney and she's not very good at being cocky in general.... :\ You also need, obviously, three strong upperclassmen for Fagin, Nancy, and Bill. But I trust you won't have any trouble with that. Best of luck! |

Thanks alot for the info guys! I've requested some info and some scripts, so we shall see if we're going to do it or not. And thanks alot for all the tips. We might have to use girls for the two kid leads also, but we are also going to be working with some new kids so you never know. |
