Oliver! Curtain Call

Our director for Oliver! just staged our Curtain Call tonight and our show opens tomorrow (Friday). Here's how it goes.

Ensemble
Who Will Buy Sellers step forward, take a bow
Mr. Brownlow, Mrs. Bedwin, Dr. Grimwig, Old Sally, and Old Lady
Mr. Sowerberry, Mrs. Sowerberry, Charlotte, and Noah
Mr. Bumble and Widow Corney
Bet and Charley Bates bow then gesture to the Orphan/Apprentices to come on
Orphans/Apprentices come on, bow.
Bill Sykes
Fagin
Nancy, Dodger, Oliver come downstage to bow. Oliver/Dodger gesture Nancy and she curtsies (sp?). Dodger steps forward and bows. Oliver steps forward and bows.

I find a few problems with the order of this Curtain Call.

1. Dodger gets a better bow then Fagin, Nancy, and Bill Sykes. IMO, the final 5 should go Dodger, Bill Sykes, Nancy, Fagin, Oliver.
2. Mr. Brownlow doesn't even get to step forward to bow from his group. He's just part of a group.
3. Orphan/Apprentices (yes, I am one) get to bow after Mr. Brownlow, Mr. Bumble, and Widow Corney. I can kinda understand us going after the Sowerberry Clan and Old Sally/Doctor Grimwig/Mrs. Bedwin/Old Lady, but still.
4. Even though Bet and Charley Bates get to gesture to the Orphan/Apprentices, they should still bow after the Orphan/Apprentices, or at least come on with them and take a step-forward-bow.
5. Oliver should get a bow without Dodger and Nancy standing behind him. He's the title character. He should bow with no one else centerstage.

What's your opinion?

Re: Oliver! Curtain Call

curtain call should be as follows..pass it on to the director..

Ensemble
Fagins Gang
Dr. Grimwig/Mrs. Bedwin/Old Sally
Charlotte/Noah
Mr & mrs. Sowerberry
Dodger & Bet
Mr. Bumble/Mrs. Corney/Mr. Brownlow
Nancy & Sykes
Fagin and Oliver

unless you have a star name as fagin..then he gets last bow alone.
ActingDude17

Nah, we don't have a star name as Fagin. This group is just a regular theatre group kinda like community theatre.

It's kinda late to change it now, LOL. We've already done our first weekend of shows. Laughing

As sees fit

Bows should be as the director sees fit! Easy as that.

the director has teh responsibility to rescarch teh roles signifigance ot the plot,etc...too many directors dont understand curtian calls.

I think when we did it, we had it as follows:

Fagin's gang (Junior Chorus) ~ Food, Glorious, Food!
Senior Chorus and then Mr. Brownlow, Dr. Grimwig, Mrs Bedwin, Old Sally, Old Lady etc. then Who Will Buy soloists ~ Who Will Buy
Noah, Charlotte, then Mr. and Mrs. Sowerberry ~ That's Your Funeral
Mr. Bumble and Widow Corney ~ Oliver!
Sykes ~ My Name
Nancy ~ As Long As He Needs Me
Dodger and Bet ~ Consider Yourself
Oliver ~ Where Is Love?
Fagin ~ Pick a Pocket
Then exit music to We'll Be Back Soon.

I always thought is was strange having Dodger and Bet after Nancy and Sykes, but we had this weird symbolism at the end of Dodger and Bet becoming the new Sykes and Nancy...meh, it was retarded.
Salome

your calls are screwed up..not only should dodger and bet have a lower call..brownlow,bumble and corney need to be alot higher.

That's a great curtain call..... definately is the best arrangement me thinks...have you ever directed a production of Oliver before , Salome?
Cause if you just did that on the spur of the moment your quite good haha.. Oliver I think is definately one of the most rickiest curtain calls me thinks..
dramadorkette

I waS meficent in Sleeping Beauty, the main antagonist! and i bowed with like 6 other people! not evn a step-forward bow!! Crying or Very sad i even got a solo song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, he's not. He's a somewhat bigger part. If you consider that his only vocal solo is practically the intro into Consider Yourself and Bet has a good amount of singing in "It's a Fine Life", the only thing making Dodger a better part is his small amount of lines.

He's certainly not a bigger part than Bumble, Corney, or Brownlow, who in Salome's very well ordered curtain call bow after him.

I havent directed Oliver but played Nancy. This was the curtain call we used based on importance of role and amount of stage time and times.

this call was also used in the most recnet tour.

Indeed, considering that Dodger gets shipped off to Australia and that's the last we hear of him.

He sings quite a lot of consider yourself, and half of i'd do anything. Bet only really has a handfull of lines in fine life and i'd do anything. Plus she has no speaking at all. Just my opinion, but i'd say Dodger was for more important, both in part size and to the story, than Bet. I dont argue that he's a smaller part than the others though.
Salome

Dodger's part is eassentially over wehen he delivers oliver to fagin. Dodger only has about 6 lines in all of act II.
Angel-of-Music*

which is still more than bet in the entire show.
Salome

correct. but the point is..Dodger is a small role not that bet is a large one. they re perfect to be teamed for curtain call.
ActingDude17

It's usually accepted that Bet's a minor role, and while Dodger is a bit larger, he's often over-exaggerated as far as prevalence in the show. My curtain call is the OP. He got the third-to-last bow, only Nancy and Oliver bowed after...which made no sense. Brownlow, Sykes, Fagin, Bumble, and Corney are all much larger parts than Dodger.
