Oliver! Audition

I've asked this question at another board (Auditions) but I haven't received a very good response. So now, who do I turn to? None other than the Oliver! fanatics.

I have an audition for Oliver! in two months and need advice on what to sing.

I don't wish to reveal my age, but I'm in the age range for the orphan boys, Oliver, and I could be the Artful Dodger too depending on the ages/heights of other leads. My voice hasn't changed yet, but I can't sing as high as same other boys my age (directors and such say I probably am gonna be a bass baritone).

The audition is for a community theater, not professional.

I would like to know what song I should sing and what part(s) I should go for.

I'm considering "Kite" from YAGMCB, Charlie's solo in "T-E-A-M", and "Suppertime." Any other suggestions would be great!

Thanks in advance!
Sweeney Hyde

Do you know your exact range?
Sweeney Hyde

How about "Round Shouldered Man" from The Secret Garden? It is sung by a young boy who's mother is dead. He is very ill, well at least he thinks it is. Also, the part he sings from "Come to My Garden" sometimes entitled "Lift Me Up" would also work (this one would show off the range).
ActingDude17

EDIT: I'll check into those songs! THX!

I can sing about two octaves higher than middle C, at an estimate.

And I'm also gonna respond to your comments at the Audition Song Thread here.

I've sung "Consider Yourself", (obviously out because it's from the show) "Gary Indiana" from the Music Man, "Seventy Six Trumbones" from the Music Man, (BTW, I got a good part with Trumbones) and many upbeat patriotic songs.
Sweeney Hyde

Gary, Indiana would certainly work for Oliver.

BTW...Seventy-Six Trombones...not Trumbones...LOL

I would go with either Gary, Indiana or either of the ones from The Secret Garden. The sheet music and the OBC recording are not hard to come by, you can order both from amazon.
ActingDude17

THX [i][u]so[i][u] much for your help.

I abbreviated it to "Trumbones", LOL.

I'll tell you how my audition goes. Although it's in two months...
Sweeney Hyde

No prob. Cool

I was just checking this thread out again, Sweeney, when I realized I'd tell you how my audition went.

We actually open next Friday (the 13th). I'm an Orphan/Apprentice/Ensemble (see sig, LOL). I think it's gonna be great!

I loved doing the orphan chorus of Oliver. It's a great show.
ActingDude17

Yeah, it's one of those shows where the chorus gets to do a lot, too.

I'm having so much fun. It's a great cast. My friend's actually Oliver.
music is my life!!!

well done! i'm in it at the moment, too. i'm in the chorus and i'm glad i look older cuz i hate food glorious food and love oom pah pah... Very Happy

when are you performing?
ActingDude17

I love being an Orphan/Apprentice AND Ensemble. It's so fun! You get to do all the Ensemble scenes and all the Orphan/Apprentice scenes. I'm a bartender in Oom Pah Pah.

We're performing July 13-15 and the 20-22. What about you?
BroadwayObssessed

i wish I was an orphan...i was too tall though.... Sad
music is my life!!!

are you in OPP?
ActingDude17

No, I don't go to OPP. The production of Oliver! I'm in is with The Drama Center.

Regardless, what state do you live in?
BroadwayObssessed

if you're talking to me...yes, I was in Omm-Pahh-Pahh, Consider Yourself, Consider yourself Encore, and Who will buy... Cool
ActingDude17

I was actually talking to Music.

EDIT: NVM. Misunderstanding, LOL.

When she said "OPP" I thought she meant a theatrical group, but now I realize she meant, "Oom Pah Pah."

Yes, I'm in Oom Pah Pah. I'm an Orphan/Apprentice AND Ensemble. It can be confusing to other people.

That's how it was with my group too...
music is my life!!!

i mean i'm not bothered that i'm not in FGF cuz i hate it but i was just wondering...
ActingDude17

LOL. We do have some older Orphans/Apprentices (including me).
music is my life!!!

wow! i bet that adds to the power of the songs! Smile
ActingDude17

Yeah. I think that's one of the reasons the director put in some of us older Orphans/Apprentices, and to keep the little dudes straight, LOL. Laughing

Tonight was our first tech. We started the show at 8 and finished at 10 and only got to the end of Consider Yourself.
