Old Deuteronomy's true character

Could Old Deut be seen to be a cat with mystical powers? Although he has the capability to escort the lucky Jellicle to the Heaviside via his magical tyre, he really appears to be an everyday cat because he lounges around in the sun, obstructing other passers-by on the pavement. Also, if the Jellicles adore and respect him, and he seems to be with them almost all the time, surely this makes him more of an everyday cat than a mystic cat. Perhaps this mysticism could be due not just to his age, but also to the stature and the respect of the other Jellicles.

Well, to me he's The Eternal. He's the oldest of the Jellicles, and best I can tell, he's the one who knows the way to the Heaviside and what's in there but can never go there himself as he'll always be here. The others are born, age, and die, but he always remains the same. This also explains, at least to me, why he's the one who finally redeems Grizabella. He saw her leave, he knows what she's been through, and he also understands that she's earned the chance for a new life--the others haven't yet.

I have almost seen him as a God character. He is the one that decides who gets to go to the heavyside lair(heaven). The other cats adore and almost worship him.

My veiws on Old D vary... sometimes I think of him as the beloved leader and spiritual guide of the Jellicle Tribe... Other times I interpret what they do as the feline version of human sacrifice and think to myself that he's secretly a bit evil.
When writing stories though, I tend to have him as being more 'human' and less perfect than the musical seems to imply. For example - nobody can have the perfect life. Just like when a human's career is going perfectly their home life often suffers I see Deuteronomy as having (at least when younger) struggled to fulfil his dual roles as father and leader, neglecting one in order to perform the other...
Moongewl

I consider him an elder sage of sorts. Any magical powers he may have were gained through experience and studying. His knowledge of the actions of others comes not from being omnipresent, but from wise predictions based on his knowledge of other cats. It is this sagacity--manifested in his wise advice and soothing leadership--that makes the other cats revere him.
Vice

I believe that Old D is eternal life, and a branch of the everlasting cat on earth. Being a part of the divine being of the Jellicles, he has the ability to open the gates to Heaviside. This action is very harsh on his material form, and as a result he is only able to open the gates to Heaviside once a year, unless it's an emergency.
I also believe that the only way a Jellicle can pass on to the next world and have a chance to be reborn (i.e. Die.) is by passing through the Heaviside Layer. Being a Jellicle is a magical balance of humanity and felinity.
