Obscure Characters

I'm in Oliver, and have some friends who have some parts that no one knows who they are. Can anyone describe Charley Bates and Old Sally to me?

Well Charlie Bates is in Fagin's gang of theives and is one of the main theives but he doesn't have to many lines. And Old Lady Sally is dying old women in the play who knows about Olivers parents. Shes kind of evil and after all her lines she dies.

Charley is the next best to Doger and he finds many things (esp. concerning oliver's 'greenness') extremely funny. He is the one who tries to keep something from Fagin at the end of "Pick A Pocket or Two." he only has a few lines, as said before, and if the director chooses to change the ending to be more like the movie, he can be the one who goes off with Fagin.
My friend played Old Sally, which actually was what introduced me to Oliver.
she is a small character that shows up in one scene near the end of the play. she has no singing parts and only a few lines before she dies. she delivers the major key to discovering Oliver's identity--his mother's locket that Old Sally took after Oliver's mother died. Finally before her death she confesses and this tells Mr. Bumble and the new Mrs. Bumble (who we know as Widow Corney) that Oliver is really rich and could be profitable, etc.
ive only read the script and some of the book, but i havent seen the play, so if im wrong on any of this, im sorry and plz correct me.

by the way, what role did you get?

I'm just an orphan, but I wasn't expecting more. Almost all the main parts, except for Oliver, went to upperclassmen, and I'm a sophomore.

I have actually never seen a version where Charlie runs off with Fagan. In the movie it's Dodger who does but in most versions of the play Dodger is taken to Jail instead. I am playing Dodger now and thats how it is in our. Both parts are fun roles. There both in great numbers. Charlies in all the gang scenes and has few lines which is good. Sally is in the Oom-pa-pa scene i am pretty sure.

i know, it sounds weird, but i was reading a thread about the different versions of show endings and that was one that someone said. i actually think it would be better to keep with the script that Doger goes to jail, Fagin goes off alone, and it is implied he's hung or caught or at least alone and hopeless.
also, idk if sally is in Oom-pah-pah, unless she is just doubling as an extra person in the bar...

We have two choruses, the orphan chorus and an adult chorus. Does anyone know what the different songs these choruses would do? Would there be any songs that they both combine in?

If I am not mistaken (I am going from the verison I did) but the orphan's chorus would do Food, Glorius Food, Got to Pick a Pocket or Two, Fine Life , I'd Do Any Thing and Be Back Soon
The Adult chorus would do Concider Yourself Who will Buy and Omp pa pa. Unless you have a finally there probably won't be any songs togeather.

My daughter just finished a production as Bet.

The kid's chorus sings Food Glorius Food and parts of Oliver at the beginning in the workhouse.

Some of the kids may also be in Fagin's gang. They sing parts of Pick a Pocket or Two, It's a Fine Life, I'd Do Anything and Be Back Soon.

The adult chorus sings Oom Pah Pah and Who Will Buy.

Both kids and adults sang in Consider Yourself in our production. And many of the kids who weren't Fagin's kids were also in Who Will Buy.

Our orphan chorus is actually in a BUNCH of songs. We're in Food Glorious Food, Oliver, Consider Yourself, Pick a Pocket or Two, It's a Fine Life, I'd Do Anything, and Be Back Soon. Then the adult chorus is in Consider Yourself, Who Will Buy, and Oom Pa Pa.

Usually there are two groups of kids, though some may be in both groups.

The first group is often smaller, they are the workhouse kids, and they sing Food Glorious Food and Oliver. They may be used in other ensemble numbers like Consider Yourself and Who Will Buy.

The second group are the Fagin's boys, they are usually bigger or older than the orphans and there are usually less of them, they are primarily in the scene in Fagin's place. They sing those 4 songs - Pickpocket, It's a Fine Life, I'd Do Anything and Be Back Soon. They may also be used in Consider Yourself and Who Will Buy.

Yeah, our directory doesn't know whether or not she'll split it up yet. It'll depend on how many little kids we bring in. If we do split, I'll probably be one of Fagin's boys.

Well, the orphan chorus could sing Food, Glorious Food, Pick a Pocket or Two, It's a Fine Life and I'd Do Anything. The Adult chorus could sing Ohm-Pah Pah and they could both sing Consider Yourself. Wait a second, the adult chorus could also sing Who Will Buy?. :]
