OBC Vs RevivalWhat are the major differences you noticed?What did you like best/worst about these productions? |
||

major differences... major differences... For one Jack's mother and the steps in the Revival bugged the heck out of me. I have to keep skipping over thier songs whenever I listen to it. Vanessa Willams was... decent, Im not going to be mean and get a whole bunch of people on my case about her. The Baker's Wife in the Revival gave more of a innocent prettier image of her then the OCB don't get me wrong I love both versions of her. and I guess thats really the huge things ... if i had to choose however OBC for me!

i thought the OBC was the best hands down!
personally i didn't like the three little pigs they added. i thought that the baker's wife had to be a little gruff which the Revival bw didn't bring all. this is just personally though |

The only things I really liked about the Revial was Our Little World because even though it didn't add to the story, it really gave an idea about Rapunzel's character/up-bringing and why the Witch was so upset over losing her daughter. I also liked the different verses they put in Last Midnight. When I watched the dvd of OBC, I always wondered, where did the baby go?
But I really hated the revial in general. I don't know, it just was totally wrong compared to the orginal. And I hated having Vanessa Williams. There are so many other people that could have done the part and they would have been a lot better than her. Last Midnight was just too pretty and soft for the Witch. Ugh, the orginal cast wins hands down every time. |

Gah! I borrowed the revival cd from my friend b/c that's the only one I can get hold of, and it can be sooo annoying! This one line that really annoys me is the Baker's Wife saying "the witches beans! We'll take them with us!" She sounds so ditzy and stupid. Grrr. Her voice just gets on my nerves. The cinderella in the revival was decent though. I'm not sure which I like better. I also hate the way Vanessa Williams goes up at the end of the greens song and says "especially the beans!" It sounds funny. I liked the little red better though in the revival. Of course, in my opinion, it's awfully hard to follow Bernadette and Joanna... Oh, and in "Our little world", the part when the Witch is climbing Rapunzel's hair always kind of creeps me out b/c it sounds vaguely dirty...

I heard the revival before I heard the original broadway cast...it's what got me hooked on the show. I've never seen a production, but I do really like the revival CD.
The original broadway is wonderful, though. But even though the revival's not perfect, I like many of the character's voices and the way they give lines better on the revival CD than on the OBCR...I think I'm outnumbered about a thousand to one on this though! Mm, with the way my mind works, though, I'd probably like the OBCR better if I had heard it before the revival...who knows! |

TRhe revival was almost a total disaster.
the only two actors who were as good as the original broadway counterparts wer greg edlemann and the great john mcmartin. as much as i love vanessa williams in Spiderwoman, she was totally miscast in ITW. the Baker's Wife was terrible! Jonna Gleason nailed that role. and its been impossible for anyone to play it better since. but this woman (whose name escapes me she was so terrible) didnt even try to act. Laura BVennati was annoying as hell as cinderella. the sets were not attractive, costumes were bland..and the addition of littel red and jack into Steps of the Palace was jarring. over all if it wasnt for John McMartin being so good i would have taken many more bathroom breaks lol |

I've only really heard the Revival, and it's my only impression of the show (I'll be performing it in camp this summer though so I got the CD). I've only briefly heard samples of the OBC, and I was a bit disappointed with it. Is there anyway someone could send it to me though?? Hearing it may change my mind.

I just watched a video on YouTube with Vanessa Williams singing "Last Midnight" in the show. I actually liked the way she did the song much more than Bernadette Peters' interpretation of it.

I noticed that when singing, the princes sound the same.

I would have to say, OBC. I haven't listened to the whole cd of the revival cast. I only listened to the little free clips they give you at Amazon. I was going to buy the revival, to add to my collection, but I quickly changed my mind. I have the OBC on Video and CD. I like how they sang on the video better than the CD. They sing to "by the book" on the CD. They didn't loosen up and ad lib much on it. But, I would say OBC by far.

My first exposure to the show when I saw the Into the Woods Performance at the Tony's on youtube.
I then started to check out some of the clips of the OBC on there, so after watching those, I was persuaded to get the cd from my library. Wondering which version to check out, I checked out the reviews on amazon.com, and everyone was saying the OBC was better than the Revival, so that's what I got. Now I'm hooked. |

http://youtube.com/watch?v=fYHTWE02OaQ <--- There's a link of the Revival Cast's performance at the 56th Tony Awards. It's a medley of the Prologue, Children Will Listen, and Ever After. I'm currently downloading some song files from the Revival.
My first exposure to ITW was the revival on broadway which I saw with my family. I loved the revival but I can't remember the voice quality. Then this year my school's putting on ITW so I watched the OBC video and listened to the CD. For some reason I love the OBC much more. IMO Bernadette and Gleason's voice are far superior, but that could just be the fact that they originated the role and nothing can really compare. Also I like the original Jack's voice (name escapes me) to the revivals. The revival Jack's voice sounds to much like a kid in my opinion. So I'll go with the majority and vote that I liked the OBC much better than the revival. |

All I can say is the Revival's Jack's voice angers me to no end. Just a neverending stream of vibrato. I gotta find the OBC.

I got the revival cd first, and abslolutely fell in love with it.
The singing is AMAZING, and the actors match their characters amazingly. I recently got the OBC, and to put it bluntly, was disappointed. Hearing the singing for one, since I was used to the polished clean sound of everyone, especially how the baker's wife was changed to a belted from that really husky style. The singing itself also had a "straight" feel, much different from the "behind/ahead of the beat singing I was used to (on the steps sounds HUGELY different. I haven't seen either, so I can't vouch for acting. But the soundtrack is amazing for both versions. I just happen to prefer the revival |

There are SO many things wrong with the above statements, I'm not even going to get started.

AK50324, I know it's hard to turn your back away from the CD that got you to fall in love with a show. Sure, you were used to the revival. You probably expected the original to be exactly the same. I understand feeling confused about it.
But to not like the different style of singing shows that you're just close-minded. Do you really think Sondheim wrote the music to be sung smoothly and polished? Leave that job to Andrew Lloyd Webber. ITW was written not just to tell a story and not just to entertain, but to also bring across both the feelings of the characters and the themes of the story. And... btw... that "husky" sound of the Baker's Wife (for the record, Joanna Gleason) voice.... that's called emotion, which is generally a characteristic of acting. |

I just got the revival CD, it is so weird!!!! I can't stand Vanessa! I want to just drop kick her! Her voice is so ugly!! I have listened to her CD's before and I love her! She was majorly miss cast in this show if you ask me! I will comment more on this when I get back!

^It's ALL bad, except for Laura Benanti, if you ask me.

The first version I heard was the Revival, and I liked it, but I'm not too familiar with the original broadway cast.
As for the revival, I liked the addition of "our little world," because I think that's a nice song. >_> However, I disliked Christopher Sieber in the revival, he was almost gurgling some of the lower notes. >_> I think that Vanessa Williams was decent as the witch, and bizarrely, I didn't like the original witch in the prologue, but I suppose that I just had to get used to hearing it, and when I heard "Stay With Me," I thought it was really good. >_> I think that John McMartin was hands-down better than Tom Aldredge. >_> However, I also think that Ben Wright was hands-down better than Adam Wylie. >_> And I admit, that having heard the revival first, I found it very, very hard to listen to Jack's Mother in the OBC. >_> All and all, though, from the bits I've heard and seen, I think I'll have to say the OBC. I'm gonna try to get the DVD. >_> |
||

The OBC Witch is Bernadette Peters... she's kinda new. So that's why you wouldn't know her name. >_>
| Pannic |
I knew the name, but "Bernadette" isn't one of my favorite words to type. >_>
| Luc |
So, you only type out words that you.... like? *sigh* N00bs can be pretty weird sometimes...
Oh, and >_> just >_> so >_> you >_> know, >_> you >_> don't >_> have >_> to >_> put >_> these >_> stupid >_> emoticons >_> after >_> every >_> sentence. >_> |
||
| Pannic |
The emoticon stays. It's my gimmick. And in addition to being weird, I'm also a nerd and I'm almost completely spineless. As for words that I don't like, the list also includes "obligatory," "oblique," "oblong," "obligor," and just about anything that begins with "obl," though I do not dislike "obligation" or its varients so much, save for the earlier mentioned "obligor." >_>
